PennDOT Updates Ease Commute for Drivers

PennDOT officials remind drivers that they can sign up for traffic emails.

With all the construction and roadwork congesting morning commutes, PennDOT officials are reminding drivers that there’s a way to make planning your rush-hour drives a little easier. Drivers can register to receive traffic and roadwork press releases directly from PennDOT. Information about particular roadways and projects also is available. Several roads and projects that could be part of your commute—such as the Liberty Tunnel Improvement Project, for those in Dormont and Brookline—are included on the list. It's Snowing!—PennDOT Ready for Winter Road Maintenance

More than 2,200 trucks are ready to roll to keep roads passable in winter weather.

With snow and colder temperatures appearing in some local forecasts, PennDOT’s final winter preparations are being made, and more than 2,200 trucks and 5,400 operators will be ready to tackle winter’s worst. “Overall, PennDOT plows nearly 40,000 miles of roadways, about the same number of miles maintained by New York, New Jersey and all the New England states combined, making ours the largest system in a major snow-belt,” State Transportation Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “With this huge number of miles, our primary goal must be to keep roads passable, not necessarily completely free of ice and snow.” Interstates and expressways are PennDOT’s primary focus during storms, and equipment may be redirected to these routes during significant …

Traffic Restrictions on Route 51 as ITS Facilities Are Installed

The work along Saw Mill Run Boulevard will continue weekdays through Nov. 25.

PennDOT District 11 will be installing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) facilities on Saw Mill Run Boulevard (Route 51) weekdays through Nov. 25, weather permitting.  Short-term lane and shoulder closures may occur as needed.  Work will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Saw Mill Run Boulevard between the West End Bridge and Crane Avenue. Bruce and Merrilees Electric Co. of New Castle, PA will be performing the work. The ITS includes traffic cameras, message boards, speed sensors and other components that help improve traffic flow by providing information for motorists. UPDATE: PennDOT, Police, Brashear High School Promote Teen Driver Safety

The program is part of National Teen Driver Safety Week.

PennDOT, the Allegheny County Police Department and Pittsburgh Public Schools presented Survival 101 today (Monday) at Brashear High School. The program was presented as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, which ran Oct. 16-22. Survival 101 explains the importance of making safe decisions when driving a vehicle, such as always wearing a seat belt, not driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs and the program encourages students to avoid dangerous distractions like texting while driving.

Liberty Tunnel Cleaning This Week

Lane restrictions will occur.

Single lane traffic in the Liberty Tunnel will occur nightly this week, Oct. 24-27, for cleaning operations. Restrictions will occur from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. according to the following schedule: One lane will remain open in each direction at all times. Dormont Police Conduct Operation Safe Stop

Wednesday morning, officers rode and followed Keystone Oaks buses to ensure motorists comply with school bus traffic laws.

Dormont police officers literally went to school Wednesday morning as part of Operation Safe Stop, which targets motorists who violate school bus safety laws. This was the first year Dormont police participated in the program in cooperation with Keystone Oaks School District and in conjunction with PennDOT. "Everyone was very obedient," said Sgt. Jim Briglia, who was on the road along with officers Tom Mathis, who actually rode along with students in a bus, and Phil Ross, who followed a bus route to Dormont Elementary School. Ross said some of the issues involving motorists and school buses are when drivers aren't paying attention or they are unsure of what to do when a bus is stopped. Liberty Bridge Cleaning Scheduled This Week

Lane restrictions start Monday.

Lane closures on the Liberty Bridge will occur nightly beginning on Monday, Oct. 10, weather permitting. Crews will be washing the bridge. Single lane restrictions will occur as needed Monday-Friday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Nov. 11. Only one lane will be closed at a time and both directions will not be restricted simultaneously. Crews from Michael Facchiano Contracting Inc. of Pittsburgh will perform the work. Outbound restrictions will be coordinated to minimize impacts on traffic leaving downtown events.  PennDOT District 11 advises motorists to use caution and expect changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area. Southbound I-579 to Liberty Bridge Nightly Closures Continue Next Week in Pittsburgh

Motorists Use Grant Street to Boulevard of the Allies

The ramp from southbound I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) to the southbound Liberty Bridge will be closed  Monday through Thursday nights, Oct. 3-6. The closure will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Crews will continue replacing bearings on the ramp. Posted detours Southbound I-579 to Liberty Bridge Traffic from Bigelow Boulevard wishing to access the Liberty Bridge should continue past the Crosstown Boulevard on-ramp and follow the detour provide above. Downtown traffic on Seventh Avenue should also follow the posted detour to access the Liberty Bridge. Liberty Tunnel Closures Continue Oct. 2-6 in Pittsburgh

Crews will be repairing the water lines inside the tunnel.

Overnight closures of the Liberty Tunnel will continue on Sunday night, Oct. 2, according to Jim Struzzi, PennDOT District 11 spokesman. Crews will be performing water line repairs inside the tunnel. Nightly closures will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday to Thursday nights in both directions of the Liberty Tunnel through Friday morning Oct. 7. Motorists are advised to consider alternate routes. Signs are posted to guide motorists using the official posted detours:   Outbound Posted Detour: Inbound Posted Detour: Commercial vehicle traffic should use the Parkway East, Parkway West and Route 51 to bypass the closures. Fort Pitt Tunnel Closure Planned for Thursday Night

The Liberty Tunnel will stay open on Thursday night to accommodate traffic.

The inbound (eastbound) Fort Pitt Tunnel on the Parkway West (I-376) will be closed on Thursday night, weather permitting. The closure will occur from 9 p.m. Thursday through 4 a.m. Friday. The outbound tunnel will remain open and unrestricted. The Liberty Tunnel will also remain open in both directions on Thursday night to accommodate the traffic. PennDOT maintenance crews will be milling and paving the inbound Parkway West near the tunnel entrance and garage. Signs will be posted to guide motorists onto northbound Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard/West End Exit 69C) to the West End to eastbound Carson Street (Route 837) to the inbound Fort Pitt Bridge. PennDOT completed work in the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel on Tuesday night.
