A final roundup of items Dormont Council discussed and approved at Monday’s meeting.
Dormont Borough has a new code enforcement officer, although the person who formerly held the responsibilities of that position won’t be leaving the borough’s administrative office. On Monday, Dormont Council approved hiring Monica Dahlkemper as code enforcement officer for the borough of Dormont. For the past eight years, Dahlkemper has served the same department for the City of Pittsburgh, completing code enforcement duties and building inspections for the city. Her first day with the borough will be Monday. The borough’s building official, Pat Kelly, who has been responsible for both code enforcement and building official duties, will now perform only building official duties. The Friends of Hollywood Theater hired Chad Hunter as the new theater manager, and he officially started this week.
Chad Hunter’s lifelong appreciation of old theaters has led him to one of Dormont’s greatest treasures. Hunter started Tuesday in his position as the new manager of Dormont’s Hollywood Theater, and said it’s the job he’s been waiting for since moving to the Pittsburgh area in 2009. “I grew up going to some of the theaters that are gone, and that always struck me, even when I was younger,” Hunter said. “I was just really drawn to the historical nature of the Hollywood, and I’m so glad it’s still here.” Friends of Hollywood Theater President Scott Jackson said Hunter was hired after a nine-month-long reorganization of the board of directors. He said former manager John Maggio was re-interviewed for the position, but ultimately Hunter’s …

A resident raised a question about ethics after Solicitor Deron Gabriel was spotted riding around with the tax collector and a councilman posting campaign signs before Election Day.
Dormont Solicitor Deron Gabriel violated no laws when he rode around the borough with two elected officials posting campaign signs, according to the executive director of the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission. At Monday's Dormont Council meeting, resident Louise Pitcher called for Gabriel to resign or be fired because he was spotted riding in a vehicle with borough Tax Collector Harvey Lieberman and Councilman John Maggio as the three posted campaign signs in the borough. "He was choosing among all of you," she told council members. Turning to Gabriel, she continued: "You are supposed to be impartial sitting on this council. You are not supposed to be involved in partisan politics in this borough." Both Maggio and Lieberman are …

Dormont elected officials share their thoughts on improving the borough.
The unofficial results are in, and Dormont officials have plans to improve the borough and keep those improvements going. The unofficial 2011 election results show that newcomers Yvonne A. Costanzo and Valerie Martino, both Democrats, and incumbent John Maggio, also a Democrat, will fill three four-year terms. “It was a hard race, but I think it turned out good,” Costanzo said. “I really do hope we can all work together and lead Dormont in a better way.” Public safety and forming a good relationship with the police department are priorities, Costanzo said. Working with current borough employees also is important, she said. “I want to make sure the employees of the borough are listened to and that we get their input,” Costanzo said. “They’…

An anonymous mailer who hit the community in August may have returned.
At first glance, the anonymous mailings some Dormont residents received Friday appear to praise current council members. But incumbent candidates say these mailings are an effort to draw a false affiliation between council and other mailings sent in August urging residents to impeach the mayor. The return address listed on the mailings—Concerned Dormont Residents, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15216—is identical to the return address on the postcards Mayor Tom Lloyd began receiving again a few weeks ago. “Dormont is on the right track thanks to council,” the mailings read, giving a list of council members’ addresses and phone numbers. Joan Hodson is the only council member not listed. On the back, the cards list …

The Friends of Dormont Pool held an elegant affair on Mt. Washington to raise money for the pool.
The Friends of Dormont Pool held its annual house party fundraiser Saturday at the Mt. Washington home of Peter Karlovich and Steve Herforth. Guests praised the pool and the initiative to keep it open. John Maggio, a Dormont councilman and the organization's president, recounted how he and his daughter walked around Dormont asking residents to sign a petition to save the pool. The nonprofit organization has since raised more than $100,000 for the pool. Maggio thanked organizers of the event—his sister Mary Jo Maggio, Karen Gotschall, Colleen Lehman and Sarann Fisher—were among them. This was the third year the group has held the fundraiser at the $2.5-million home with gorgeous views of the city. Karlovich grew up in Dormont and said he …

There was actually a lot of discussion about that one. Mainly, there was concern because the KO band typically has several signs at the Christmas tree sale, and the VFD does the same during their July car raffle. Jeff Naftal said that as written, there is to be "one sign per property." However, he said the term "property" can be defined as a "site" rather than strictly as a zoning property (i.e…   more ›
