Lent begins Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Ash Wednesday commences the Lenten season, and that means it's fish fry time!  Every Friday until Easter, you can find great fried fish and other meatless dinner options at churches and organizations around the South Hills.  Here's a list of some local options for you and your family. CMU Grad Serves Up Pittsburgh-Area Fish Fry Map

A Carnegie Mellon graduate, Hollen Barmer turned her love of fish fries into a map to chart the many places to find Friday fish for Lent.

Leave it to a non-Pittsburgh native to find a way to let all yinz know about where to find fish n'at for Lent. Hollen Barmer, a writer/editor for Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute, has found all the fish fries Pittsburgh has to offer—and a way to add those she might have missed. "I decided to make the first map in 2012 because I'd been enjoying going to fish fries for a few years and wanted to see all the options based on location," explained Barmer, who moved here from Memphis, TN 13 years ago to attend graduate school at CMU. Congratulations to Resurrection Church in Brookline for being named Dormont-Brookline Patch's Readers' Choice poll for best local fish fry! As of Friday afternoon, Resurrection received 43 percent of the vote. St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon came in second, with 29 percent of the vote. Readers Choice Poll: Where's Your Favorite Fish Fry?

We're two weeks into the Lenten season, and by now you've probably had time to sample one or two of the local fish frys. All of us at Patch want to know—where is your favorite fish fry? "We've got the friendliest people and the tastiest fish."

Debbie Brust runs the Church of the Resurrection fish fry every Friday evening during Lent, but good luck finding her amidst the hustle and bustle of the volunteer staff and the large crowd of hungry customers out to support the church and enjoy some delicious local eats. "I'm in the kitchen, I'm on the line, I'm checking on our patrons. I never stop on Fridays," she said. When the kitchen is at its most chaotic, the happy and voracious crowd is a reassurance of success. For the six to seven members of the fish fry committee, the enduring popularity of the event is all the encouragement needed to continue the tradition. Brust is pragmatic about the challenges. "We laugh a lot. We pray before the event starts, so that we'll find the humor …
