Dormont police blotter, Jan. 18 to Jan 25.
Dormont police have charged a Pittsburgh man for a robbery last week at the CVS Pharmacy on West Liberty Avenue. Sherman Jones, 35, with a last-known address in the City of Pittsburgh, was charged with retail theft. Police said he stole $240 worth of cigarettes from CVS in a smash-and-grab-type robbery. Dormont Sgt. Jim Briglia said the Dormont police were able to work with police in McCandless Township to find Jones. According to the police report, McCandless Township police informed Dormont police earlier this week that Jones had been arrested for committing a similar robbery at a CVS Pharmacy in the North Hills area. Jones already was being held in Allegheny County Jail on those charges, and was given notice of the additional charges …

Dormont police are investigating a “snatch-and-grab” robbery at CVS Pharmacy on West Liberty Avenue. According to the police report, a man walked into CVS Pharmacy at 8:23 p.m. on Jan. 15, stole cartons of cigarettes valuing $240, and ran from the store. The man is described as a white male about six feet tall. Police were able to get surveillance video from the store, and are investigating the incident. No arrests had been made, as of Friday, Jan. 18. Dormont police are investigating a robbery that occurred at Nails 3000 on West Liberty Avenue on July 9. According to the police report, two women—both described as white women in their 30s with blonde hair—came to the salon for manicures. The owner told police that after one woman received a manicure she asked to use the restroom and was gone for a long time. When the owner went to check on the woman, the woman was seen leaving through a back door with the owner’s coat. Easter is a holiday steeped in tradition, and for many families, the 30-minute trip from Dormont to Sarris Candies in Canonsburg is one of them. That tradition can go on unfettered starting today—because the retail shop in Canonsburg is now officially reopened. The store had been closed since a Feb. 3 fire, but the shop was in full swing Thursday, as customers perused everything from chocolate-covered pretzels to chocolate Easter bunnies. Although the day was overcast, Spring looked like it had already arrived at the venerable shop, with pastel colors dominating the interior design. If you’re having a little trouble keeping your healthy New Year’s resolution going, chances are you’re not alone. Colleen Kail, an employee at Dewalt’s World of Health in Dormont, said the store always sees a rush of customers after the New Year. Many are trying to keep a New Year’s resolution to be healthier, she said, and weight loss seems to be a top goal. “They want a quick fix, and of course there’s no such thing,” she said.
