"We have about 10 up so far, and they are cute," said Brookline Chamber of Commerce President Linda Boss. "We've got lots of compliments." Brookline is about to leave a permanent mark on the tattoo industry. The shop manager is one of 16 ‘Ink Master’ contestants trying for a $100,000 grand prize. She said the show is an unmatched experience for artists. “It’s something like boot camp for tattooing,” Miller said. “Fun, but it’s definitely sink or swim.” The 27-year-old can handle the pressure. Miller is a jack-of-all-trades around the Brookline Boulevard shop, which opened in March. She is its owner, an illustrator/designer and tattoo artist. She also is responsible for the interior design of the shop, and the logo she …

Brookline Poet Performs in National Competition

Five Pittsburgh-area poets will compete in the week-long National Poetry Slam.

Five years ago, Brookline poet Tera McIntosh saw a slam poetry performance for the first time. Two years ago, she stood on stage for her own first performance. This year, she will compete in the 23rd annual National Poetry Slam, which is being held this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. To have made it to the national level is nothing short of an honor, she said. “It’s kind of the holy mosh-pit of slam poets,” McIntosh said. “You’re going to see the best of the best there.” The competition starts today, Aug. 7, and ends Saturday. The first performances will be held this evening, with round two on Thursday and finals on Saturday night. The National Poetry Slam is held in a different city each year, and it’s something like the Olympics of …

Because You're Mine, I Shop the Line

New “shop local” program give you benefits for shopping on Brookline Boulevard.

“As sure as night is dark and day is light I keep you on my mind both day and night And happiness I've known proves that it's right …” Because You’re Mine, I Shop the Line. In the vein of Johnny Cash’s famous tune, Brookline’s new "shop local" program is designed to keep minds on something the community holds dear: its business district. The “Because You’re Mine, I Shop the Line” program is a shopper reward program that awards a cash-equal benefit for shopping at Brookline businesses. The program is a way to encourage shopping locally at small business, as well as a way to unify Brookline’s business district, said Nathan Mallory, who owns Cannon Coffee on Brookline Boulevard and is a member of the Brookline Chamber of Commerce. “This is …

Brookline to Celebrate Parks with Open Mic Nights, More

Cannon Coffee holds open mic nights every Wednesday at the coffee shop, but a few of those will be moved outdoors this summer.

Tonight's open mic night at Cannon Coffee will be held inside the coffee shop as usual, but the group tried something last week that they hope to carry throughout the summer. Community members held the event—appropriately named Music in the Park—last Thursday at Brookline Memorial Park. Cannon Coffee co-owner Nathan Mallory said the event was successful, and more open mic nights likely will be held outside this summer. "What’s awesome about this is that Cannon sponsored it, but it was mostly put together by the members of open mic night," Mallory said. The evening included a barbecue, and of course, live music. Mallory said he considers it a benchmark event, because it was organized almost entirely by community members. "I asked the …

Bar Crawl Money Buys Community Flowers

Money raised at the Brookline bar crawl was used for improvements to Cannon Park.

Volunteers with Energize Brookline were busy Monday evening working on their second project for the community. The first was the "Because You're Mine, I Walk the 'Line" Brookline bar tour on Friday, which about 120 people attended, and which the volunteers said was highly successful. Their second project is a product of the first—about a third of the $970 raised by the bar crawl was used to buy flowers and other planting materials to improve the garden space at Cannon Park. The group plans to help the VFW maintain the park throughout the season. With the remaining money from the bar crawl, the group plans to buy fertilizer to keep the gardens fresh. The next Energize Brookline project is Sunday morning. Volunteers are invited to meet at …
