Sidewalks Take Shape on Brookline Boulevard

Local business owners say the construction frustration has been worth it, and they’re looking forward to the next phase of work.

Customers in the 700 and 800 blocks of Brookline Boulevard can now walk on solid ground when they visit their favorite businesses. Sidewalks were poured in front of several businesses Wednesday and Thursday, and although a chain link fence still separates the storefronts from the road, business owners said there are unmistakable signs of progress. “It’s so nice to walk on real ground,” said Ben Haake, co-owner of Cannon Coffee. “The planting beds are going in, and we know there are benches on the way. It’s been fun to watch all this. It really is like a facelift.” The Brookline Boulevard Reconstruction Project, which started in March, already has been a long process for those living through it, and some businesses owners worried that the …

'Taste of Brookline' Tickets on Sale Now

The Taste of Brookline event is back and you can get discounted tickets, starting today.

When the first Taste of Brookline event was held last year organizers expected it to be a hit, but even they were surprised at hearing such high demand for a second one. Tickets are on sale now for this year's Taste of Brookline, which features a bigger venue, and likely more vendors. "We are very excited," said Stephanie Miller, Taste of Brookline Co-Chair and a Brookline community volunteer. "I think people really saw the value in it last year, and with the construction about to happen this will be a great way for the businesses to let people know they're still open." Miller said eight businesses already have committed to the event. Pitaland, Cannon Coffee, Vinnie’s Pretzel Shoppe and Brookline Pub are returning. Scoops on the Boulevard …

Utility Work is Precursor to Brookline Boulevard Reconstruction Project

Pennsylvania American Water will be on the Boulevard through next Wednesday upgrading water lines.

The Brookline Boulevard Reconstruction project doesn't start until this spring, but work already is being done on the Boulevard to prepare for the project. Crews from Pennsylvania American Water will be completing water line restoration work on the Boulevard through next Wednesday, Feb 13, mainly in the area near the Brookline Boulevard-Flatbush Avenue intersection. Eric Nix of Pennsylvania American Water said the water line work will be followed by line service work, which will take a month or more to complete. The the Boulevard Reconstruction Project is expected to begin. Nix said so far, the work has not had a major effect on traffic in the area. "We're staying in just one lane, so people are able to get past," he said. "We're not …

Brookliners Featured in 'Equal Magazine'

Brookline native Tera McIntosh and others with local connections were featured in a recent Issue of "Equal Magazine" for their slam poetry.

A local poet—and Pittsburgh Passion football player, and Ph.D. graduate—is in the spotlight again, in the January 2013 issue of Equal Magazine. Tera McIntosh is featured prominently in the article, "Poetry Out Loud: Voices from Pittsburgh's Slam and Spoken Word Scene," written by Kara Holsopple. She's not alone. The article also features a number of other locals you might have seen at Cannon Coffee on Open Mic Nights, or during Steel City Slam and Young Steel events. The article focuses on the importance of poetry, especially in the lives of young people, and how the slam poetry scene continues to evolve in Pittsburgh. Jude Waldo of Mt. Lebanon and Anna Voelker of North Hills, who both are quoted in the Equal article, began performing with…

What's One Small Business You Can't Live Without?

I asked this question on the Dormont-Brookline Patch Facebook page, and the response was great. See what people said.

Move over Halloween and Thanksgiving—it's Oct. 28, and I'm already seeing advertisements for Black Friday sales. But in my opinion, the day after Black Friday is much, much more important. That day is Small Business Saturday, the day we celebrate local small businesses and their contributions to the community. We're lucky, in Dormont and Brookline, to have thriving business districts full of small businesses. Yesterday on the Dormont-Brookline Patch Facebook page, I asked you to name one small business you can't live without, and the response was great! The local watering holes are favorites, and Cain's Saloon and Cip's Sports Bar made the list. Local restaurants It's Greek to Me, Don Campiti's, The DorStop, MeKong, Dormont Dogs, Pitaland …

Cannon Coffee Owner Named to 40 Under 40 List

Nathan Mallory, co-owner of Cannon Coffee in Brookline, was named to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “40 Under 40” list.

Just over the Brookline border, on a farm in Baldwin Township, it’s much quieter than inside the storefront of Cannon Coffee. Away from the conversation and clinking cups, a honeybee hive is Nathan Mallory’s only focus this particular Wednesday afternoon. Unless you asked directly, he probably wouldn’t offer the fact that he just received an important local honor. Pittsburgh Magazine named Mallory to its 40 Under 40 list this year, a designation he could have earned with any number of his community projects and advocacies. Urban farming is just the latest. “The opportunity to live in a city and do this is a pretty cool thing,” he said. “I grew up on a farm, but there just weren’t people around with this kind of expertise.” The 31-year-old …

Letter to the Editor: Brookline Cleanup a Success

Keith Knecht of South Pittsburgh Development Corporation is writing to thank the volunteers and businesses who participated in Pitt Make a Difference Day.

Brookline's fall clean-up was given a turbo-charger of youthful enthusiasm through the Pitt Make a Difference Day in which 40 college students and ten community volunteers teamed up and picked up 45 large bags of trash, 3 huge blue bags of recyclables and about a dozen tires. The students were very enthusiastic, friendly and worked hard. They really loved the free coffee and pastries and after the clean up relaxed for a half an hour in the coffee shop and wolfed down some awesome pie from Brookline's own Antonio's Pizza.  Special thanks to our fine boulevard businesses: Cannon Coffee, Party Cake Bakery and Antonio's Pizza for supplying the troops with caffine, pastries and pizza! Thanks to the Unitversity of Pittsburgh and our stalwart …
