Dormont police blotter, Feb. 1 to Feb. 8.
Dormont police were dispatched with the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department to an apartment fire in the 3000 block of West Liberty Avenue on Feb. 7. Police Sgt. James Briglia said once inside the apartment, police found drug paraphernalia, scales, and marijuana. Michael Curtin, 24, of Dormont, was charged with possession and possession with intent to deliver, according to court records. Briglia said Curtin was charged by summons. Briglia said the fire was started by an unattended candle. There were no injuries in the fire, and minor damage to the apartment. No residents were displaced. An overheated extension cord is likely responsible for the Jan. 4 fire.
An apartment fire that displaced five Dormont residents likely was caused by an overheated extension cord, according to Dormont VFD Deputy Chief Jeff Arnold. Fire broke out in the three-story building just before 3 a.m. on Jan. 4. at 2728 Miles Ave., displacing three adults and two children. The reidents received aid from the Red Cross. Arnold said firefighters think a space heater in one apartment overloaded power to an extension cord that was connecting it to a wall socket. “The heater wasn’t the problem,” Arnold said. “The extension cord wasn’t the proper type of cord to be used with a space heater.” He said there also was laundry and paper around the space heater, causing the fire to spread quickly once it ignited. An apartment building fire that broke out just before 3 a.m. Wednesday morning has displaced five Dormont residents. Dormont Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Arnold said the initial call came in at 2:47 a.m. Wednesday morning for a fire at 2728 Miles Ave. in Dormont. “The fire started in the rear of the structure and the damage is pretty much contained to that,” Arnold said. Arnold said the fire started on the first floor of the three-story building and reached a portion of the second floor as it climbed an outside wall, but the building did not have major structural damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Arnold said. There were no major injuries and no damage to surrounding buildings. Five people—two adult …

An apartment building fire in the 2700 block of Miles Avenue in Dormont displaced three families Tuesday night. Lauren Chapman, communications specialist for the American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Region said two adult individuals and one adult with two children received help from the Red Cross Tuesday night after the fire. Two families are being housed by the Red Cross, Chapman said, and the third was able to find housing elsewhere. Chapman said the Red Cross assisted the families with food, clothing and shelter after the fire, but she didn't know if any other funds or collections had been set up locally for them.
