Activity Buses Reinstated at Keystone Oaks

Keystone Oaks School District discontinued activity buses earlier this year as a cost-saving measure.

In a decision officially made on Tuesday, the Keystone Oaks School District will again provide activity buses for students involved in after-school activities. According to a release issued by the school district, the 4 p.m. bus, which typically serves students who participate in the district's after-school tutoring program, and students who participate in clubs and activities, will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 30. It will run every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of the school year. The 5:15 p.m. bus, which is generally used by students who participate in team sports, will begin again on Monday, Nov. 19 in conjunction with the start of the winter sports season. It will run every Monday through Thursday for the remainder of the school year. …

KO Board to Reconsider Activity Bus Decision

After-school activity buses were eliminated in the Keystone Oaks School District, but the school board is planning to discuss the situation.

For budgetary purposes, Keystone Oaks School District eliminated after-school activity buses for the 2012-13 school year. But after residents raised concerns at last week's school board meeting, the board plans to reconsider the issue and look at other options for providing transportation from after-school activities. Two activity buses ran until 5:30 p.m., making two runs to each of the three boroughs that feed into the district. Eliminating the two buses resulted in a $50,000 savings for the school district. Depending on the day or activity, the number of students riding the buses could range from five to 25, school officials said. Often, rush hour traffic meant it took as long as 45 minutes to bus the first round of students from the …

No Activity Buses at KO This Year

Keystone Oaks will not offer an activity bus during the 2012-13 school year.

The Keystone Oaks School District will not provide activiity buses for any of the district buildings for the 2012-13 school year. Parents or guardians of students who participate in after-school activities will be responsible for the student's transportation from the school. District public relations director Jim Cromie said in an email Monday that the decision was made for budgetary reasons. Only a handful of students had been using the activity buses, he said, and it was becoming expensive to run the buses to three communities. Typically, most students are either finding their own rides or driving themselves, he said. The announcement can be found on the district's website. “Robert’s” description of the golf ball issue is misleading, when he refers to it as an effort to “save pennies”. At issue was the fact that during KO’s recent budget discussions, it was discovered that in purchasing balls for the golf team, KO was being charged ABOVE retail price. Even though KO was buying in bulk (which normally generates a much lower price than buying a regular retail box), it…   more ›
