The Keystone Oaks Marching Band was awarded for its performance in the Veterans Day parade in Downtown Pittsburgh.
The Keystone Oaks Golden Eagle Marching Band has received an award for its Nov. 10 performance in the Veterans Day Parade in Downtown Pittsburgh. The band received a trophy for Best Three Star Band at a ceremony held at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Oakland on Nov. 18. The competitive parade is organized by the Federation of War Veterans' Societies Inc. of Allegheny County, and was judges by members of the Great Lakes Judges Association. Drum Major Kiara Kennelly and her family joined Keystone Oaks music teacher Bill Eibeck at the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the entire band. John DeLallo said that as a veteran, he's honored to attend the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Dormont Elementary. But in his opinion, he said, the ceremony really serves as a learning opportunity for the students. “Any guy here will tell you the same thing,” he said. “’I didn’t do anything heroic, but I served in the company of heroes.’ Some of those heroes didn’t come back.” DeLallo, who served in the Air Force from 1968 to 1989, attended the elementary school’s Veterans Day ceremony on Friday morning. First-grade teacher Leslie Holmes said students had been busy working on projects and presentations to honor the veterans, and were excited for the day. Allegheny County Veterans Services has compiled a list of special offers and discounts available to veteran in honor of Veterans Day. Outback Steakhouse is honoring America’s military veterans and those in active duty by offering a free Bloomin’ Onion and a Coca-Cola product Tuesday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 11.
