Brookline native Tera McIntosh and others with local connections were featured in a recent Issue of "Equal Magazine" for their slam poetry.
A local poet—and Pittsburgh Passion football player, and Ph.D. graduate—is in the spotlight again, in the January 2013 issue of Equal Magazine. Tera McIntosh is featured prominently in the article, "Poetry Out Loud: Voices from Pittsburgh's Slam and Spoken Word Scene," written by Kara Holsopple. She's not alone. The article also features a number of other locals you might have seen at Cannon Coffee on Open Mic Nights, or during Steel City Slam and Young Steel events. The article focuses on the importance of poetry, especially in the lives of young people, and how the slam poetry scene continues to evolve in Pittsburgh. Jude Waldo of Mt. Five Pittsburgh-area poets will compete in the week-long National Poetry Slam.
Five years ago, Brookline poet Tera McIntosh saw a slam poetry performance for the first time. Two years ago, she stood on stage for her own first performance. This year, she will compete in the 23rd annual National Poetry Slam, which is being held this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. To have made it to the national level is nothing short of an honor, she said. “It’s kind of the holy mosh-pit of slam poets,” McIntosh said. “You’re going to see the best of the best there.” The competition starts today, Aug. 7, and ends Saturday. The first performances will be held this evening, with round two on Thursday and finals on Saturday night. The National Poetry Slam is held in a different city each year, and it’s something like the Olympics of …

Last week, Brookline resident and Pittsburgh Passion player Tera McIntosh shared what the Women's Football Alliance National Championship - hosted in Pittsburgh this year - means to those involved. After Saturday's game at Heinz Field, we have a winner. Holly Peterson ran the opening kickoff back 82 yards for a touchdown, and her San Diego Surge semipro women’s football team intercepted a pass with 18 seconds left to beat the Chicago Force 40-36 Saturday in Pittsburgh—and claiming the equivalent of the Women’s Super Bowl. According to ESPN.com, more than 2,000 fans turned out for the Women's Football Alliance championship at Heinz Field—the first women’s title game to be held in an NFL stadium. “We were in a heavyweight fight,” Force coach…

Pittsburgh Passion member Tera McIntosh, of Brookline, discusses the weekend lineup and what it means to be in the WFA.
Move over boys–when the ladies of the Women’s Football Alliance visit Pittsburgh this weekend, they’ll show that football isn’t just a guys’ game. On Saturday, Aug. 4, the 2012 Breaking Barriers Festival and SilverSport WFA National Championship will be held at Heinz Field. The championship is held in a different city each year, and Pittsburgh was chosen as this year’s host for the game between the Chicago Force and the San Diego Surge. The game marks the first women’s football championship held in a professional football stadium. “This is such a huge step, for women’s football to move forward and play in a professional stadium,” said Tera McIntosh.
