Artist Scott Hunter painted the new addition to Sugar Café’s walls.
There’s a colorful new addition to the walls of Sugar Café, and it might seem to patrons that the mural went up overnight. It actually took two nights—15 hours of work—for Bethel Park artist Scott Hunter to fill the wall above the lounge area with a colorful representation of Sugar Café’s retro-modern vibe. “(Sugar Café owners) Mike and Kelly (James) were kind enough to let me be creative about it,” Hunter said. “We were looking at the space and looking for a retro image. I do a lot of collage work, and I took that approach.” The mural features the desserts and coffee Sugar is best known for, in a retro setting that matches the café’s interior. The woman in the mural is not supposed to be James, Hunter said, but the unnamed woman seemed to…

The popular Dormont café turns one this week, and is giving free cupcakes to its customers.
When Sugar Café has a birthday, everyone gets cake. To celebrate what owner Kelly James said has been the scariest but most rewarding year of her life, Sugar Café will give a free cupcake to anyone who orders lunch there this week. Sugar Café opened its doors on Potomac Avenue one year ago this week, and was welcomed by a waiting crowd. Those original customers decided to stick around, and James said she’s thrilled to be celebrating the restaurant’s first birthday with them. “The regulars at Sugar Cafe have become our family and I so look forward to seeing them every day,” James said in an email Tuesday. “They have become a huge part of our lives.” James said the first year wasn’t without a few stumbling blocks, but that the staff was able…

Lindsey Smith was at the airport a few years ago when she saw someone binge eating all the wrong things. At first, she said, she was judgmental. But then she remembered that not long before, she’d been loyal to the same bad habits. “At that moment I realized that food was much more than what we put in our bodies,” Smith said. “It’s our careers, religion, self esteem, self love. All those things feed us in different ways.” The airport incident was one of the events that inspired the Brookline health coach to write her first book, “Junk Foods and Junk Moods: Stop Craving and Start Living.” This Thursday, Smith will hold a book release party at Sugar Café in Dormont. Smith currently is a keynote speaker and one-on-one health coach for "The …

Sugar Café and Full Pint Brewing will host a food and beer tasting tomorrow night.
Sugar Café and Full Pint Brewing Company are pairing up for a food and beer tasting at Albert’s Lounge in Dormont on Thursday night. Brandon Sachs of Sugar Café said the idea for the event grew from a conversation between the restaurant and brewery at the Taste of Dormont event in October. “Full pint was there, and got to talking and thought it would be a good idea,” Sachs said. “Actually we’re hoping to use a couple of Full Pint’s products here for the month of February.” Sachs said Sugar Café is hoping to use a coffee porter stout produced by North Versailles-based Full Pint in some of its breads and cakes. Thursday’s event, however, will give a taste of what both businesses have to offer. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25…

The 'Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour is in several Pittsburgh neighborhoods, including Brookline. Now Dormont is on the list.
When Sylvia McCoy decided to start a business in 2008, she wasn’t thinking about the economic outlook. Her plan was to give Pittsburghers a taste of the city’s neighborhoods—via it’s first organized culinary tour. “I realized quickly after doing some research that there are no culinary tours in Pittsburgh, and there’s one in almost every city,” McCoy said. She founded the ‘Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour that year, starting with a Strip District tour and soon expanding through city neighborhoods, including Brookline. The walking tour hits several local eateries in each neighborhood, and includes discussions of the history of the neighborhood and the businesses and landmarks there. “When I started the business, it really was just that I was …

The cafe’s special blend of coffee from La Prima, the Strip District-based roaster, will be on hand also.
