'Breakfast and a Movie' Continues After Sugar Cafe Closes

Hollywood Theater will continue to hold "Breakfast and a Movie" events, and the Sugar Cafe owner will continue providing the meal.

It wasn't long after Dormont's Hollywood Theater partnered with Sugar Cafe for "Breakfast and a Movie" events that the popular Dormont cafe unexpectedly closed its doors. This led to questions on the Facebook pages of both organizations about whether the new event would continue. The answer, according to Friends of Hollywood Theater member Margaret Jackson, is yes. In an email to Dormont-Brookline Patch, Jackson said Kelly James, owner of Sugar Cafe, plans to continue providing breakfast for the event through this year. "Kelly James will continue to cater the event through 2013," Jackson wrote. "The event [last week] was wonderful, same quality of goodies and coffee." The next Breakfast and a Movie is "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) on Feb. 17…

Sugar Cafe to Close After This Weekend

The owners of Sugar Cafe sent notice via email newsletter and Facebook that the business will close after this weekend.

The owners of Sugar Cafe, Kelly and Mike James, sent notice Friday evening via email newsletter and the Sugar Cafe Facebook page that the business will close after this weekend. Below is the text of the email newsletter sent by Sugar Cafe: Sugar Cafe's last weekend....  I was continually told that I was crazy to open a small business in this economy.  It never mattered though.  I was so in love with this concept and this place, maybe since I was a little girl. It would be a sunny, happy place where friends could meet for brunch.  It would be very  kid friendly so that Moms could enjoy a coffee and a pastry with each other.  It would have really great music.  Everything would taste so good.  A person could order a fine cake for anything …

Gotta agree Bob. I have had the same experience which is the reason I stopped going there. If Kelly reopens, it should be up near Cochran. With the DorStop and Fredo's, Potomac is saturated with these type of establishments.   more ›

Restaurant Spotlight: New Winter Menu at Sugar Cafe

Some tasty changes are coming to the cafe, starting this weekend.

If you're headed to Sugar Cafe for brunch this weekend, you'll see some new and tasty changes to the menu. In addition to the usual delicious coffee, pastries and breakfast staples, the Potomac Avenue restaurant will now offer such goodies as a roasted eggplant sandwich, country ham sandwich, and home-made maccaroni and cheese. Employee Brandon Sachs said the cafe just wanted to make a few seasonal changes to the menu, and is planning to change it up again in April to introduce more spring-friendly foods. The new menu is attached to this article. Have you been to Sugar Cafe? Review this restaurant on the Sugar Cafe directory listing. Follow Dormont-Brookline Patch on Facebook and Twitter. UPDATE: Can Sugar Cafe Predict the Election?

The election results are in! From Sugar Cafe, at least.

In the days before the 2012 election, reports surfaced of local bakeries using sweet snacks to predict the outcome. One of Dormont's local bakeries is giving it a try, too. Stop in to Sugar Cafe on Potomac Avenue, and you'll have a choice between bright blue Democratic donkeys, and Republican red elephants. The "votes," or number of cookies bought, was about equal at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Sugar Cafe employees said they had sold about a dozen of each. Around 1:15 p.m., Sugar Cafe's owner, Kelly James, tweeted that the donkeys had pulled ahead by four. Sugar Cafe employee Caitlin said it had been fun to watch people ponder the cookies and make guesses about the election all morning. Interestingly, she said, more donkey cookies had been …

What's One Small Business You Can't Live Without?

I asked this question on the Dormont-Brookline Patch Facebook page, and the response was great. See what people said.

Move over Halloween and Thanksgiving—it's Oct. 28, and I'm already seeing advertisements for Black Friday sales. But in my opinion, the day after Black Friday is much, much more important. That day is Small Business Saturday, the day we celebrate local small businesses and their contributions to the community. We're lucky, in Dormont and Brookline, to have thriving business districts full of small businesses. Yesterday on the Dormont-Brookline Patch Facebook page, I asked you to name one small business you can't live without, and the response was great! The local watering holes are favorites, and Cain's Saloon and Cip's Sports Bar made the list. Local restaurants It's Greek to Me, Don Campiti's, The DorStop, MeKong, Dormont Dogs, Pitaland …

Bakeries, Bridal Stores Part of Dormont History

Dormont Businesses Go Green

The Green Business Blitz is coming to Dormont on Aug. 4.

Dormont businesses are going green, with a little help from local organizations dedicated to the cause. On Aug. 4, the Allegheny Together Program, along with Penn Future and Pittsburgh Climate Initiative will host the Green Business Blitz on Potomac Avenue. “This initiative is called The Black and Gold City Goes Green, and it got started because it’s the community arm of Pittsburgh Climate Initiative,” said Virginia McGrath, who is working with Penn Future and helping with the campaign. McGrath said the neighborhoods—which included Oakland and Regent Square earlier this year—were chosen because they wanted to work not only with city neighborhoods, but with the suburban communities. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Aug. 4, an information booth…
