Where to Find the Best Black Friday Deals in the South Hills

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday rule the shopping roost after Thanksgiving.

If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters even earlier this year—starting on Thanksgiving Day! Walmart announced that it would open its doors at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22 and offer holiday doorbusters while supplies last. These include deals on TVs, iPads, an electric scooter for $79 and a steam mop for $39. Not to be outdone, Target and Best Buy are also planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Target's deals begin at 9 p.m. According to an ad leaked online, the best deals will be for TVs, a Nook, a Nikon camera and an XBOX 360 Kinect bundle. At Best Buy, doors open at midnight. Doorbusters include deals on TVs, phones and Samsung laptop bundles. …

Last year when they opened at midnight I thought this is pushing it, BUT THIS YEAR THEY CROSSED A LINE…   more ›

'Jacqueline's Salon' Owner Publishes Book

Jacqueline Capatolla, owner of Jacqueline's House of Beauty in Brookline, has published a book about starting and succeeding in a small business.

When Jacqueline Capatolla opened her first beauty salon, she would have loved a how-to manual that explained all the challenges and joys she would encounter in the business. Of course such a manual didn’t exist then, but she hopes she’s written one now that will inspire and encourage new small business owners in their own endeavors. Her new book, “Shear Dreams,” will be released later this month. “This is basically a how-to textbook about starting a business,” Capatolla said. “It’s based in the beauty industry because that’s what I do, but it could be used as motivation or inspiration for any business.” Capatolla owns Jacqueline’s House of Beauty on Brookline Boulevard in Brookline. She also opened a second location on Grant Street a …

VIDEO: Steelers, Celebs at Hollywood Theater

Cast members and Steelers were among those who attended a fundraiser and film event at Dormont's Hollywood Theater on Friday.

With Emma Watson signing autographs on Potomac Avenue last year, and a Tom Cruise movie filming in town last December, Dormont is no stranger to celebrity visits. But Friday's special showing of "Christmas in Compton" brought celebrities to Dormont's Hollywood Theater with a purpose. The event served, in part, as a fundraiser for the Red Cross, to support survivors of Hurricane Sandy. "We didn't expect it to get this big," said Hollywood Theater manager Chad Hunter. "We're certainly not complaining that it did. It's definitely great for the theater, but it's supporting a good cause, too. We couldn't have asked for this. It's wonderful." The movie was co-produced by Paula Gregg and Susan Burig, both Pittsburgh natives, who chose Hollywood …
