Ladies, I would love to provide you with photos to your hearts' content—unfortunately, I'm one person, with lots of photos to take and articles to write. I'm pretty good at multi-tasking, but alas, I haven't mastered the ability to do everything all at once (trust me, I'm working on that). If either of you get to Party Cake before I do again, help your neighbors to have a better look at this …   more ›

Unique Finds at Local Bookstores

Dormont’s two used bookstores thrive on unique offerings and great service.

Used bookstores are like mushrooms, according to Frank Oreto. They tend to pop up everywhere. Getting them started is easy, he said, but the trick is finding the niche that will keep them going with giants like Barnes & Noble right down the road. Oreto and Jamie Grassman, both used bookstore owners in Dormont, are writing the book (so to speak) on surviving when the economy, competition and advertising costs seem to work against small businesses. “It doesn’t cost much to start a used bookstore,” said Oreto, co-owner of Eljay’s Used Books on West Liberty Avenue. “A lot of them come and go though.” Oreto moved his 15-year-old business from Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood to Dormont about a year ago. The larger West Liberty storefront …

Mexi-Casa Serves Up Something Different on Black Friday

Kegs & Eggs on Black Friday? See how Dormont business owner Theo Giannoutsos’ added some spice to the biggest shopping day of the year.

Question: What do you get when you combine an Irish bar tradition, a Mexican restaurant and an ad hoc American shopping holiday? Answer: Black Friday Kegs & Eggs at Mexi-Casa, which is Dormont business-owner/chef Theo Giannoutsos’ way of adding some flavor to a familiar scene. Located on the corner of West Liberty and Hillsdale avenues in Dormont, Mexi-Casa has been tagged “Pittsburgh’s Least Authentic Mexican Restaurant” for its playful and delicious take on Tex-Mex barbecue dishes. Since Giannoutsos opened Mexi-Casa’s doors in 2003, the menu has evolved and expanded to feature a variety of Americanized Mexican dishes, and Mexicanized American dishes, some of which contain ingredients you don’t typically see encased in a tortilla. 'A Christmas Story's' Ian Petrella Comes to Hollywood Theater

The actor who played 'Randy Parker' gives viewers a play-by-play of a Christmas classic.

Black Friday shoppers descended on malls everywhere yesterday, but in Dormont, a different venue was getting all the attention. The Hollywood Theater hosted Ian Petrella, who played “Randy Parker” in the classic Christmas film “A Christmas Story.” Petrella said he enjoys touring smaller towns, and has had the best audience responses in the midwest and eastern parts of the country because those towns seem similar to the movie setting. It’s always fun to meet the people who helped make the film such a success, he said. “It’s interesting because we went, we made (the movie), and kind of nothing came of it after that,” Petrella said. “It’s kind of like summer camp, the way I remember it. It’s a bizarre thing to go through sometimes.” Hollywood…

State Sen. Wayne D. Fontana

PA Works = Jobs

By helping businesses create jobs, rebuilding the state’s aging infrastructure and energizing Pennsylvania’s economy, more than 28,000 jobs might be created.

Last February, I joined with my Senate Democrat colleagues in unveiling PA Works, a six-point proposal that is aimed at helping businesses create jobs, rebuilding the state’s aging infrastructure and energizing Pennsylvania’s economy. Our plan will spur the creation of more than 28,000 jobs, leverage over $2 billion in new private investment, and will result in more than $150 million in general fund savings. We would accomplish this by focusing on six core areas—small business, workforce training, critical state investments, clean and green energy, infrastructure investment and tax fairness —eliminating duplications, getting rid of what doesn’t work and focusing on what does. There were a number of bills in the package that can make a real…
