You might have seen people picking up trash along Brookline Boulevard—you might not know that they're part of the Adopt-a-Block program, and that they're all volunteers. In addition to community cleanup days, which happen about twice a year, volunteers with the Adopt-a-Block program go out about once a week to help clean up around the neighborhood. If you want to volunteer, too, blocks are available and all you have to do is contact organizers with the South Pittsburgh Development Corporation and add your name to the map. To get involved, email Pam Grabowski at mnp.grabowski@verizon.net and put Adopt A Block in the subject line, call at 412-343-2859, or write to The Brookline, P.O. Box 96136, Pittsburgh, PA 15226. SPDC and other community …

A grant award to Brookline’s South Pittsburgh Development Corporation will help the organization fund a study of the neighborhood’s small business district, and how it can be improved. The $25,000 grant was awarded by the Design Center of Pittsburgh, which on Tuesday awarded $275,000 to 12 neighborhood revitalization projects. “SPDC decided on a marketing study on how to market Brookline Boulevard, and attract people to Brookline Boulevard,” said SPDC member Jennifer Grab. Grab said SPDC hopes the grant will help the neighborhood form solid goals and realistic community projects that will grow the business district and attract both visitors and residents to Brookline. She and SPDC members Stephanie Miller, Lois McCaffrey and Jen Askey, met…

A group of volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh will visit Brookline this weekend and help make the neighborhood shine. The South Pittsburgh Development Corporation (SPDC) is partnering with Pitt Make a Difference Day for the fourth year in a row to clean up Brookline Boulevard. About 40 students from the University of Pittsburgh have committed to picking up litter along Brookline Boulevard and some of the side streets. The students will be a great help on the Boulevard, said SPDC Vice President Keith Knecht. SPDC is looking for about 10 local volunteers to serve as team leaders for the students, picking up litter with them and showing them where to go. Interested volunteers should meet at Cannon Coffee on Brookline Boulevard at 10…

The City of Pittsburgh Zoning Board has rejected a proposal to build a beekeeping center in Brookline, but those involved with the project say they’re not putting it to rest. After putting so much work into the project application, which was submitted in February, South Pittsburgh Development Corporation member Nathan Mallory said the rejection was frustrating at first. But after taking a few days to think about it, he said he doesn’t think the project is a failure—not yet. “In the spirit of things, I don’t feel we’re dead in the water on this one,” he said. “We still have a lot of Brookline community members who are looking forward to it.” Burgh Bees owner and master beekeeper Steve Repasky said the problem wasn’t with the bees—it was …

The possible presence of beekeeping grounds in Brookline has residents buzzing, and at last week’s South Pittsburgh Development Corporation meeting, an expert was on hand to address concerns. Although several residents at the meeting spoke in favor of the proposed apiary—a honeybee-keeping project that would be run by Burgh Bees in conjunction with SPDC—some residents also said they had worries. “I just don’t see that this is a good thing to have in the city where there are so many houses,” said David Gumber, a Brookline resident who lives near the vacant property at Jacob and Whited Street, where the apiary would be located. “This isn’t the country. There’s a lot of houses and a lot of people and I don’t feel it’s right.” Residents also …

When the members of South Pittsburgh Development Corporation started thinking about what could be done with the vacant property at the corner of Jacob and Whited streets in Brookline, they decided to think outside of the box. Way outside of the box, actually—they were thinking about honey bee hives. “This is something the community has taken an interest in and wants to learn more about,” SPDC member Nathan Mallory said during a meeting Monday. “We’d like to be part of something in Brookline that has opportunity to get widespread demographic, help with rebranding, be progressive and new.” The idea isn’t so unusual in Pittsburgh—the first community apiary in the country is located here. Burgh Bees, a Pittsburgh-based association of urban …

Brookline is missing a few things, and local organizations are looking to fill the need.
There are a few things community members say Brookline either doesn’t have or needs better access to, and several groups are looking to fill the need. At a South Pittsburgh Development Corporation meeting last week, members tossed around ideas of what is needed in the community—gallery space, an art studio, rehearsal space for musicians, a place to give music and dance lessons, and a local theater for stage productions. Members also discussed a Brookline Boulevard building that has the potential to fill those needs. Last Thursday, accompanied by an architect and realtor, members of the group went to see the building at 1246 Brookline Blvd., with mixed reactions. The walk-through was intended to give a preliminary look at a building that …
