Both Republicans and Democrats came out to support the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund at a fundraiser featuring politicians and hopefuls yukking it up for a the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.
Usually, the audiences at the Improv are laughing at the politicians, but, at the Candidates’ Comedy Night, the audience was laughing with them. The fundraiser for the Allegheny County Music Festival Fund had politicians reaching across the aisles so that the constituents could roll in them. State Sen. Fitzgerald and Raja find common ground on some key issues.
They’ve debated many times, slung a fair amount of mud at each other, and now, after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising, signs and staff, Allegheny County voters get the final say Tuesday on who will be their next County Executive, the Republican nominee, D. Raja, or Democrat Rich Fitzgerald. Raja, like any Republican in Allegheny County faces an uphill battle where Democrats outnumber the GOP by a roughly 3-1 margin. In an apparent attempt to counter the disparity, Raja outspent Fitzgerald by a 2-to-1 margin from June through late October, according the last major campaign finance reports before the Nov. 8 election. Candidates from across the state gathered at the Improv to raise funds for local youth.
Candidates’ Comedy Night 2011 took place on Thursday night at the Pittsburgh Improv. Candidates who performed a stand-up comedy act included Rich Fitzgerald and Raja, Allegheny County executive candidates; Rep. Chelsea Wagner, county controlller candidate; Vic Stabile and Judge David Wecht, candidates for Pennsylvania Superior Court judge; Kathryn Boockvar and Anne Covey, candidates for Commonwealth Court judge; and Alex Bicket, candidate for Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge. Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato also took to the microphone. Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist, stand-up comic, corporate speaker and playwright, emceed the event.
