It's pothole season. The freeze-thaw cycles are creating bone crunching, kidney punching potholes on many local roads—and Dormont and Brookline are no exception. I drove through a wicked one on Brookline Boulevard earlier this week. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be this way. Here are a couple ways to let your local road crews know where the problems are: Follow Dormont-Brookline Patch on Facebook and Twitter. For more information, sign up for our email Newsletter.

Since PublicStuff became available to Dormont resident in October, Borough manager Jeff Naftal said the program has been successful.
Nearly three months after the PublicStuff system launched in Dormont, borough manager Jeff Naftal is declaring the system a success. “We’ve seen some real benefit already to having this in place,” Naftal said. "People have been using it and we've addressed several things." PublicStuff—which allows residents to report code violations, service requests, complaints and other concerns, and track responses to their messages—became available in Dormont on Oct. 1. Residents submitted 69 requests in October and 42 in November. Total numbers for December were not immediately available. “That’s pretty good,” Naftal said. “We want to keep that up because the more we know about, the more we can fix and address. It allows us to be not just reactive to …

Borough manager Jeff Naftal said people are using the PublicStuff system, and so far, it's working.
Last week, a very common thing happened on West Liberty Avenue during rush hour—a pickup truck was parked illegally, and it was blocking traffic. But this time, the inconvenience didn't last long. With the help of the PublicStuff system, a resident reported the problem at 7:45 a.m. Dormont borough manager Jeff Naftal said that by 7:50 a.m., the Dormont police had addressed the problem. "People are definitely using it," Naftal said. "We're getting a lot of improper parking reports, especially on West Liberty, especially during rush hour." The system has been up and running for about 10 days, and people also have used it to report speeding and potholes. Naftal said when a complaint is sent through PublicStuff, the department qualified to …

Dormont has a new contract with its police force. Borough council approved the new three-year contract at its meeting Monday night. The agreement will run from Jan. 1, 2013 through Dec. 31, 2015. Officers will receive a 2.75% pay raise this Jan. 1 and 3% increases each of the following years on January first. The contract also calls for a $50 uniform allowance increase in 2015 and brings borough police officers back into the same health insurance plan with Highmark that covers other borough employees. The total cost to the borough for the pay and uniform increases over three years will be $52,622.72 with a projected savings of $9,508.18 on health insurance costs. Dormont Borough employees completed a training course Monday for using the new public service software, which will be available Oct. 1.
Dormont Borough is on track to have the PublicStuff system in place on Oct 1, borough manager Jeff Naftal said Monday. Dormont Borough employees took a training course Monday at the borough building to learn how the new public service software system will work, how requests will be filtered and who will track and respond to them. “It’s not out there for the public yet, but we’re testing it internally and making sure everyone on the borough’s end understands how it works and what to do when requests come in,” Naftal said. He said he expects the transition into using the system will be easy for staff as well as residents. The system will be heavily advertised once it is available for public use, and Naftal said the borough wants residents to…

A new software system will make it easier for Dormont residents to report problems in their neighborhoods.
Dormont Borough is making it a little easier for residents to report problems in their neighborhoods. Earlier this month, Dormont Council approved the purchase of a service request system that would allow users to submit questions and information to the borough via cell phone or computer. Once in place, the system, called PublicStuff, can be used by residents to report code violations, service requests, complaints and other concerns, and track responses to the messages. The system will cost $1,500. Borough manager Jeff Naftal said the system also will help the borough better track and respond to service requests from residents. Residents also would be able to track the progress of response to the problem online. "It allows you, the public…
