Patch Poll: Should Congress Raise the Minimum Wage?

President Obama has proposed making minimum wage $9 an hour—and some Democrats want to push the minimum wage above $10 an hour. What do you think?

A majority of Americans support President Barack Obama’s proposal to increase the minimum wage, according to NBC.com. Some 71 percent of those surveyed said they supported raising the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour from $7.25, while 27 percent opposed it, according to a Gallup Poll released Wednesday. States have the ability to set their own minimum wage level, as long as it is above the federal minimum wage. Pennsylvania maintains the federal standard at $7.25. The minimum wage in Pennsylvania for jobs where employees receive tips is $2.83. According to an editorial in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 2.9 percent of U.S. workers make minimum wage. Most of them are students working part-time, not the primary wage earner supporting a …

@Honest Citizen – Taking the time to comb through old posts to find some with which to find silly or stupid for the sole purpose of informing the authors they are being silly or stupid and/or that they are in need of getting a life very well might be an indicator the one taking such time is also in need of getting a life – just a thought. Patch Poll: What Should Be President Obama's Top Priority in His Second Term?

The issues are many, but which stands out as the one most important to America?

A flurry of festivities will set Washington, D.C. in motion this week as President Barack Obama is sworn in Monday for his second term in office. With "Faith in America's Future" as the theme for the 2013 inauguration, the celebration will reflect the country's perseverance and unity, as well as commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol Dome in 1863. The inaugural address, parade, and a number of balls and galas that honor the president will have a certain priority of their own. But when the hoopla dies down, there's some serious work to be done. Through the last year, our Patch Polls have focused on some of the major issues facing the country. This week, …

Patch Poll: What's the Best Way to Avoid the 'Fiscal Cliff?'

Tell us what you think is the best way for President Obama and Congress to work together to keep tax rates from rising and major spending cuts from being enacted in January.

Last year, Congress and President Barack Obama agreed to a program—now known as the "fiscal cliff"— to reduce the federal deficit. If Congress and the president don't reach an agreement within the next few weeks, tax rates will rise in January for almost all Americans and major spending cuts will automatically occur next year in most government spending programs. Democrats and Republicans don't agree about how to best raise the federal government's revenues. The president and most congressional Democrats favor tax rate increases on the wealthiest Americans. Most congressional Republicans call instead for closing loopholes and reforming the tax code. Both parties have indicated a willingness to implement spending cuts. A point of …

My mom lost all of her stock in the bailout. She's still bitter about it, but she would've lost it anyway if they had liquidated without the bailout. She probably should've sold it in the 90s. Still, I'm thankful that the bailout agreement left some legacy money/health care for my grandmother, who is practically dependent on it today.   more ›

Nearby: Bethel Bakery Holding a Presidential Confection Election

With the political spotlight from the CookieGate scandal earlier this year, Bethel Bakery decided it was only fitting to hold its own election with its now notorious cookies.

Bethel Bakery is holding its own presidential confection election running from now through Election Day, Nov. 6. Votes can be cast by purchasing star-shaped shortbread cookies in red for Republican and in blue for Democrat. Each cookie is worth one vote, unless you purchase the larger Obama or Romney picture cookie, which is worth six votes.  Red, white and blue jimmie star cookies are available for the Independent or undecided voter. When Bob Direng, of South Park, learned of the confection election this week while buying some sweet treats as a gift, he immediatedly asked to buy an Obama picture cookie. "I think it's great," he said of the political contest. "If this guy (Mitt Romney) wins ... I'm moving to Canada," he added. With the …

Obama Stumps on Health Care, Middle Class Roots at CMU

President Barack Obama greets hundreds of supporters at Carnegie Mellon, a stop on his Rustbelt campaign tour.

President Barack Obama urged a crowd at Carnegie Mellon University today to stay the course, despite newly released June jobs numbers showing sluggish employment growth across the nation.  "We knew we wouldn't be able to do it overnight, because these problems weren't created overnight," Obama told hundreds of supporters gathered near the university's College of Fine Arts during the sweltering July afternoon.  The U.S. Department of Labor reported today that employers created 80,000 new jobs during June, leveling the nation's unemployment rate at 8.2 percent. The report has dampened hopes that the economy was on the rebound after showing strong employment growth earlier this year.  Obama didn't directly reference the latest employment …

Obama Touts Innovation at CMU's Robotics Institute

President rolls out public-private initiative to spur technological advancements.

President Barack Obama visited Pittsburgh this morning to announce a new initiative between universities, businesses and the federal government to enhance research and technological development. Obama toured the Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center to learn more about upcoming technology and how it can spur economic growth in America. The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership would funnel $500 million to launch the public-private research initiative. Obama said he hoped it would bring new inventions from the drawing board to the market place faster. “We have not run out of stuff to make,” he said. “We just need to re-invigorate our manufacturing (sector).” Before speaking, Obama toured the university’s robotics …
