Restaurant Spotlight: Potomac Bakery

Lots of Dormont-Brookline restaurants, shops and other great places can be found in our directory. Review them here!

Potomac Bakery isn't exactly a restaurant, but it is a great local stop for cakes, cookies and other sweet specialties, so we think it still fits into the category for this week's restaurant spotlight. The bakery has been a staple on Potomac Avenue since 1927, specializing in fresh cakes, breads and pastries. It also has a location on West Liberty Avenue in Mt. Lebanon. It's been a stop on local food tours, and most recently was a stop on a September walking tour of Dormont hosted by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. Have you been there? Gender Reveal Cakes a Growing Trend

Boy or girl? Only your baker knows!

More and more Pittsburgh-area couples are finding out the sex of their baby in a much sweeter way—with a gender reveal cake. "We've definitely seen a growing trend," said Megan Fialkovick, an Oakmont Bakery employee. "It's kind of just starting to pop up all over the place," said Courtney Seymour, a Potomac Bakery employee. Some couples choose to keep the moment private and intimate or with close family and friends. Others use it as an excuse to throw a party or make the baby shower even more exciting. Here's how a gender reveal cake generally works: The ultrasound technician writes the sex of the baby down on a piece of paper and seals it in an envelope. The mom and dad then take the sealed envelope (if they can stand the suspense) to …

Pittsburgh Food Tour Makes Stops in Brookline, Dormont

The 'Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour is in several Pittsburgh neighborhoods, including Brookline. Now Dormont is on the list.

When Sylvia McCoy decided to start a business in 2008, she wasn’t thinking about the economic outlook. Her plan was to give Pittsburghers a taste of the city’s neighborhoods—via it’s first organized culinary tour. “I realized quickly after doing some research that there are no culinary tours in Pittsburgh, and there’s one in almost every city,” McCoy said. She founded the ‘Burgh Bits and Bites Food Tour that year, starting with a Strip District tour and soon expanding through city neighborhoods, including Brookline. The walking tour hits several local eateries in each neighborhood, and includes discussions of the history of the neighborhood and the businesses and landmarks there. “When I started the business, it really was just that I was …
