First-time business owner Deb Bell’s chose Potomac Avenue for her new store, Deb’s Gourmet Shop.
A new shop on Potomac Avenue is bringing gourmet tastes to Dormont shoppers. Deb’s Gourmet Shop opened in April, and owner Deb Bell said her goal is to bring shoppers those things people see in magazines, but have a hard time finding in stores. “Usually you can only get these kind of things in the summertime and you have to go to a craft show or order it,” she said. “It’s things you can’t normally go into the store and buy.” Bell, a first-time business owner who is originally from Whitehall and now lives in West Mifflin, said her husband worked in the restaurant business for several years and will help run the store. Dormont police are looking for the suspect in Sunday's robbery.
Dormont police are looking for the suspect in an armed robbery at CoGo's on Potomac Avenue early Sunday morning. Police from Dormont, Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon, Baldwin Township and the City of Pittsburgh responded to the store at 6:50 a.m. on March 17. According to the police report, a man entered the store, pulled a semi-automatic style pistol out of his jacket and put it on the counter, then said to the clerk, "Hand over all the money." A total of $137 was stolen from the store. Surveillance footage from inside the store showed a white male wearing a gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt under a black jacket, with light-colored blue jeans and light-colored tennis shoes. Two people were arrested for allegedly breaking into cars in the Banksville area and stealing GPS units.
Two people were arrested Monday for allegedly breaking into unlocked cars in the area and stealing various items, mainly, GPS units. Police arrested Scott Richard Lazor of Imperial, and Crystal Lee Mros, of Clinton, on Greentree Road. Pittsburgh police had initially responded to the 2300 block of Rosegarden Road in Banksville for a resident's report of suspicious people in dark clothing who were carrying backpacks and looking into car windows. According to the police report, the two had stolen a GPS until from a vehicle in the area. The GPS was returned to its owner. Lazor was charged with theft from a motor vehicle, and with loitering and prowling at night. He is being held in Allegheny County Jail, according to court dockets. A …

Three of the thefts occurred from unlocked cars on Potomac Avenue.
Five thefts occurred in the Banksville area—three on Potomac Avenue, near the Dormont border—between March 4 and March 10. Pittsburgh Police report that all thefts occurred from unlocked vehicles, and several GPS units were stolen. Thefts occurred at the following locations and times: Police remind resients to remove valuables from vehicles, lock vehicles, and call 911 to report suspicious activity. This week's local business spotlight is Beyond Bedtime Books, located on Potomac Avenue in Dormont. Jamie Grassman has owned and operated this hometown book shop for three years. The shop has a wide variety of books, from classics to new titles and antique books. Beyond Bedtime also has hosted local authors for book signings. We're trying to track down some more info about this new store, who owns it, and when it will open.
From the looks of it, a new frozen yogurt shop is opening on Potomac Avenue in Dormont, next to Thai Spoon. Unfortunately, that's about all we know at this time. Paper covers the windows, leaving us to wonder what sweet treats will be revealed. As of Feb. 20, a sign in the front indicated the shop will open soon, but doesn't give a name or a date. It's great to see a new business on Potomac Avenue, and Dormont-Brookline Patch is looking for some more info so we can write a proper business feature and spread the word. Hollywood Theater must raise $75,000 for a digital movie projector, or face going dark—possibly for good.
Letting Hollywood Theater’s screen go dark once again isn’t something theater manager Chad Hunter is willing to allow. Unfortunately, that fate is again becoming a real possibility for the Dormont landmark—the only single-screen, independent movie theater in the South Hills—if the theater can’t raise the necessary $75,000 to buy a digital movie projector. “Increasingly, it’s cheaper for studios to produce movies digitally and distribute them that way,” Hunter said. “The writing is on the wall for it … Small theaters are not part of the studios’ financial formula and we’re falling through the cracks.” Hollywood Theater frequently shows movies on 35mm film, a format that used to require 2,000-foot film reels to be shipped and delivered to …
