Open enrollment is under way for 11 Pittsburgh public schools, including West Liberty K-5 in Brookline. Five spaces are open in each grade, K-5, at the Brookline elementary school. There are also some spots open in Beechwood PreK-5; Banksville K-5; Pittsburgh Manchester PreK-8; Weil PreK-5 in the Hill District; Westwood K-5; Woolslair K-5 in Lawrenceville; Fulton PreK-5 in Highland Park; Lincoln K-5 in Lincoln-Lemington; Colfax K-8 in Squirrel Hill; and Spring Hill K-5. The Pennsylvania Treasury's Bureau of Unclaimed Property lists local organizations and businesses with money due them—and there might be some out there for you, too.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents and recovered stolen property. Most of this unclaimed property is owed to individual residents. (Read below to find out how to search for yourself or for a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups, and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. Pittsburgh Public Schools this week launched a new website, with an easier-to-use navigation design and more user-friendly features to help keep parents and other informed. School officials said the website was re-designed with families and community members in mind. "As we work toward our goal of becoming a district of first choice, we know we must continually improve the way we communicate with our families and those considering sending their children to the Pittsburgh Public Schools," said Superintendent Linda Lane, in a statement released by the district. Last week, the board adopted its 2013 budget, but the millage rate won't be set until its Jan. 23 meeting.
The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education adopted the district's $521.8 million general fund budget for 2013 last week, but will wait to set the millage rate until its Jan. 23 meeting. Earlier this month, the district recommended the board set a tax rate that would raise property tax revenue, after 11 years of no increase, to create a reserve fund to cover the cost of real estate appeals. On Dec. 10, Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Stanton Wettick provided an extension to the county’s reassessment timeline and the district’s timeline for setting the millage rate and homestead exemption from gaming revenues. Pittsburgh Brashear was the setting for a new reality television show this past week, and filming wrapped up with a concert Sunday night.
When Langley High School closed last year, and the former Langley students became Brashear students, the merger was tough for both sides. The schools organized activities to make the integration easier, but perhaps nothing worked quite like the ambitious project of a television crew that set up camp in the school to film a new reality series. For the past week, USA Networks filmed part of a reality television show at Pittsburgh Brashear High School. The new series focuses on starting choirs, and filming wrapped on Sunday with a concert.
