Allegheny County will host a rally in celebration of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ second-round playoff series against the Ottawa Senators. The event will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 14, in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse located at 436 Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh. WDVE’s Val Porter will emcee the rally, which will feature the following five contests for Penguins fans: Winners of the costume, cheer, banner/sign and dance contests will be determined by audience vote. Prizes include rounds of golf for four at a county golf course, day passes to a county pool, Penguins shirts and rally towels. Fans from Dormont and Brookline are invited to the 'Annihilate the Islanders Rally' in downtown Pittsburgh.
Allegheny County officials are planning an "Annihilate the Islanders Rally" before the Pittsburgh Penguins' first playoff game Wednesday, May 1. The rally begins at noon in the Allegheny Courthouse courtyard and includes giveaways from the Penguins and Turner's Dairy and an appearance from Iceburgh. Val Porter from WDVE will host the event and the Kardasz Brothers will perform live music. The best-of-seven playoff series against the New York Islanders begins at 7:30 p.m. at Consol Energy Center. As part of the PensFIT program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation made a donation to each of the district's three elementary schools.
The Pittsburgh Penguins might not be on the ice yet this season, but their proteges at Keystone Oaks elementary schools will be getting a lot of "ice" time, thanks to a donation. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation donated more than 20 pieces of street hockey equipment to each of the Keystone Oaks elementary schools: Dormont Elementary, Fred L. Aiken Elementary, and Myrtle Elementary. The district received the equipment after applying through the PensFIT program, an initiative to encourage children to be physically active. The hockey gear retails for more than $3,000. “We implement a floor hockey program each winter as part of our curriculum,” Dormont Elementary physical education teacher Brad Bengele said in a statement from the district…

Steelers, movie stars, artists and breakfast are all part of three special weekend events at Hollywood Theater.
This weekend, Dormont's Hollywood Theater will play host to three special events. Today, Friday, at 6 p.m., you might be able to do a little star gazing outside the theater. A special showing of the independent film "Christmas in Compton" is tied in with a fundraiser event. Members of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates, as well as cast members and recording artists are scheduled to attend, and proceeds from raffles benefit the Red Cross. A movie event with special guests including Steelers, Penguins, actors and more will benefit the Red Cross and Hurricane Sandy victims.
A star-studded evening at Dormont’s Hollywood Theater will raise money for the Red Cross, and for victims of Hurricane Sandy who still are recovering from the storm. A special showing of the independent film “Christmas in Compton,” which opened in theaters last week, will be held at 6 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 16. “Christmas in Compton,” a comedy co-produced by Pittsburgh natives Paula Gregg and Susan Burig, is about a father-son duo and their community fighting to save their Christmas tree lot after a bad business deal. The movie stars Keith David as the father, Eric Roberts as a sleazy music executive, and Omar Gooding as the son. Township manager Jerry Andree says facility still is far from a done deal.
Plans are in the infancy stage for the Pittsburgh Penguins to partner with UPMC on a state-of-the-art sports performance center and practice rink in Cranberry. The proposed 150,000 square foot complex would be located in the Cranberry Woods business park off Route 228—near the newly-opened Hilton Garden Inn—and offer hockey-related training and injury treatment and prevention. The goal is to have the facility open by the summer of 2014, said UPMC spokeswoman Susan Manko. But first, the township must give its approval. Cranberry manager Jerry Andree said having the sports complex—which would be geared primarily toward hockey players—in the community is far from a done deal.
