After Dormont Council rejected plans for a skate park plan, Mary Pitcher has approached another community with the idea.
Could a skatepark be coming to Scott Park? A Scott resident, who tried to have a skatepark in Dormont only for it to be rejected there, is now pushing for it to be built in the township or other South Hills communities. But the township commissioners are uncertain about the funding plan and want to know a lot more about the concept before even discussing it. The township was approached recently by Mary Pitcher, who wants to build the skatepark as a way to remember two of her sons after they drowned in July 2008 while at a reservoir in the Allegheny National Forest. The family originally lived in Dormont, but Pitcher has relocated to Scott Township. Dormont Park appeared to be the prime location for the skatepark, but the council there …

An insider provides insight to Pitcher Park's next steps and intentions.
Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park wishes to issue this statement to avoid any further misinformation. While the outcome of the latest Dormont Council vote was a disheartening blow to Pitcher Park, it is not the final chapter. Pitcher Park is looking into the resulting legal matters of this vote, but at this point has not decided on which avenue to pursue. This is being done to protect the organization and in no way is an attempt to cause harm to Dormont or its residents. We can promise that any decision will be the result of careful consideration, legal advice and will be ethically sound. Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park is at this point reentering the deliberation process of other communities that would benefit from a skate park donation, …

Council voted Monday not to move forward with an ordinance that would have approved a previous motion in favor of the park.
Dormont Council voted Monday not to move forward with the Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park project. Monday’s agenda included an item to advertise an ordinance that would have approved the April 5, 2010 motion the previous council passed in favor of the park. The 2010 motion resulted in a detailed memorandum of understanding. However, borough solicitor John Rushford said the former council did not follow proper procedure, voiding both the 2010 motion and the MOU. During the public comment session at the beginning of the meeting, Pitcher Park Foundation President Mary Pitcher said her understanding after speaking to Rushford was that the borough—not the Pitcher Park Foundation—had made a mistake in the process. “We just don’t understand how …

The new borough solicitor and interim borough manager attended Monday’s Dormont Council meeting.
For the first time in more than a month, all seats were filled at the Dormont Council meeting. “You’ll all recognize that there are a few new faces here with us tonight,” said council President Bill McCartney. “We now have a full complement.” New borough Solicitor John Rushford, of the firm Dodaro, Matta and Cambest, attended Monday’s meeting, as did Dave Soboslay of the management firm Delta Development. Delta Development was hired as interim borough manager, and Soboslay will be the borough’s main point of contact until a permanent manager is hired. McCartney said further discussion of both firms would be held at next week’s meeting. Also during the meeting: The next Dormont Council meeting is April 2 at 7 p.m. at the recreation center …

Dormont Council members plan to vote on several motions next week regarding Pitcher Park, but they are not planning a blanket vote against or in favor of the project.
Dormont Council plans to take action next week regarding the Pitcher Park issue, but the action won’t involve voting for or against the proposed skate park. Instead, council plans to vote on at least three motions that could help bring order to what council President Bill McCartney called a “horrible conundrum.” The first would be to advertise an ordinance to ratify the April 5, 2010 motion passed by the previous council members, as well as the resulting Memorandum of Understanding for the multi-use park proposed by the Pitcher Park Foundation. Solicitor Deron Gabriel provided a legal opinion regarding the borough’s responsibility to the Pitcher Park Foundation earlier this month. But Councilwoman Laurie Malka said she wanted council to …

Hello DSA, Thank you for your suggestions. We are exploring all possibilities, not just those that end in a courtroom. I can assure you however we will not "rush" into any decisions. It is our hope to part ways with Dormont in a much more favorable light than was previously experienced. We hope that through this process we may even be able to gain support from those who opposed this project. …   more ›
