Local business owners say the construction frustration has been worth it, and they’re looking forward to the next phase of work.
Customers in the 700 and 800 blocks of Brookline Boulevard can now walk on solid ground when they visit their favorite businesses. Sidewalks were poured in front of several businesses Wednesday and Thursday, and although a chain link fence still separates the storefronts from the road, business owners said there are unmistakable signs of progress. “It’s so nice to walk on real ground,” said Ben Haake, co-owner of Cannon Coffee. “The planting beds are going in, and we know there are benches on the way. It’s been fun to watch all this. It really is like a facelift.” The Brookline Boulevard Reconstruction Project, which started in March, already has been a long process for those living through it, and some businesses owners worried that the …

Brookline’s three main community groups will now share space under one roof, with an official office on Brookline Boulevard. The South Pittsburgh Development Corporation, Brookline Chamber of Commerce and Brookline Area Community Council will share space with Melissa Distel Photography at 800 Brookline Boulevard. “This is a place where people can go if they have questions about anything community related,” said Stephanie Miller, Event Manager and Community Development Consultant for Brookline. “The hope is that it becomes a space for people to check in if they need to, especially during the reconstruction project.” Some activities or small-group meeting for each of the organizations will be held in the office, but mainly it is an …

Saturday’s festivities set the mood for a bright and jolly holiday season.
Getting into the Christmas spirit was easy Saturday night, as Light Up Night festivities lined Brookline Boulevard. Cannon Coffee served up hot chocolate, cookies and other Christmas treats throughout the evening. A couple doors down at Melissa Distel Photography, Santa stopped by to discuss gift-giving and pose for pictures with the kids. Brookline Ministerium coordinated a live Nativity scene in front of Brookline Presbyterian. Christmas carollers added spirit to the event-and a petting zoo added some humor. Check out our Light Up Night photos – and feel free to send us your own! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone! Dormont’s Light Up Night will be Saturday, Dec. 3.
