Dormont police blotter, Feb. 8 to Feb. 14.
A driver whose car ended up on its side after an accident claimed he swerved to miss a deer, but Dormont police said that scenario is unlikely. Police responded to the 1500 block of Hillsdale Avenue on Feb. 10 at 3:25 p.m. after the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department notified them of an accident in which a vehicle was on its side on the sidewalk in front of a Hillsdale Avenue home. The vehicle struck and damaged a retaining wall on the property, and there was heavy damage to the vehicle, according to the police report. The driver, identified as Alan Peace, 29, of Mt. Lebanon, told police he swerved to miss a deer as he was turning from Belrose Avenue onto Hillsdale, according to the police report. Police determined that Peace was speeding …

The new stops are along Hillsdale and Kelton avenues.
For those with students in after-school activities, the Keystone Oaks School District has added four new stops to the after-school activity bus routes. Do you recognize this guy? This young, male dog was found with no ID chip and no collar on Hillsdale Avenue in Dormont on Tuesday. He is a light brown or fawn color with patches of darker brown across his back. He knows some commands, has done well on a lease and appears to be house trained. Animal Control Officers believe he might not originally be from Dormont, but could be from the Jefferson Borough area. Adding a stop sign in the neighborhood was recommended by the borough's Traffic and Parking Planning Commission, and neighbors say it would be a big help.
After an impromptu softball game featuring some all-star neighborhood kids wrapped up near Crosby Avenue on Monday night, a few neighbors stood on the street talking. The street is busy with people as well as cars, and if Dormont Council approves a stop sign—to be placed on Hillsdale Avenue at Crosby Avenue—neighbors said it could make their community a whole lot safer. “We have about 18 kids that live in this block (of Crosby),” said resident Sean Lach. “Speeding, at certain times, is up.” On Monday, Dormont Council accepted a report of recommendations from the borough’s Traffic and Parking Planning Commission. Dormont Council will meet today, Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Dormont Municipal Center on Hillsdale Avenue. The meeting agenda, attached to this article as a PDF file, includes discussion of the fee schedule, tax anticipation note, and a possible contract with Jordan Tax Service for collection of local services tax. A number of items regarding change orders are listed under Property, Supplies and Planning. Council President Bill McCartney also plans to provide updates on the borough manager search, a traffic calming report and the possibility of revising an ordinance to allow dogs in borough parks.
