Random Violence, Steady Support for Attack Victim

After being attacked in the Strip District, a Brookline native was left with a fractured jaw, loose teeth, astronomical bills—and a throng of neighbors lending their help.

When William Reed Wingo went out one Saturday, he figured on it being a wild night—“wild” by his standards, anyway. He finished work (he’s the catering manager at Square Café in Regent Square), went for a six-mile run (he’s also the founder of the Square Run Club), and headed to the Strip District to go dancing. “A wild Saturday night for me is dancing at 11 and being home by 1 and in bed,” Wingo said. The night got crazier than he anticipated—before it even began. According to Wingo, he was walking along Smallman Street past the Heinz History Center around 11 p.m. A group of five men were in front of him.
