Barnes served as assistant principal at Dormont Elementary between 1998 and 2000, before becoming principal at Aiken. Dormont Elementary held a first-ever Science Olympiad on Monday.
Dormont Elementary students have conclusive evidence that science is, in fact, a lot of fun. The school’s first Science Olympiad, a day of science-based activities that challenged students both physically and mentally, was held Monday. Aiken Elementary has done a Science Olympiad for the past two years. Dormont Elementary principal George Shevchik said former Keystone Oaks Superintendent William Urbanek wanted to hold the event district-wide. So, when teachers Lori DeMartino and Kim Puffer said they were willing to organize it at Dormont Elementary he was happy to let them do it. George Shevchik—the only principal Dormont Elementary has ever had—is retiring today.
George Shevchik always knew he wanted to be a teacher, but he hadn’t planned on becoming a principal. He’s glad his career took him that direction, because it led to what he said is the best job in education he’s ever had. Shevchik, Dormont Elementary’s first and only principal since it opened in 1995, is retiring after 18 years with Keystone Oaks School District. “Will I miss it? Yes,” Shevchik said. “I will have to go through withdrawal. This is a top-notch elementary school. I have no regrets here.” Shevchik’s official retirement date is today, March 9, but he will continue to serve as the Dormont Elementary principal through the end of the school year. He never wanted to leave the school or the students mid-year, he said. He has a …

The Keystone Oaks School Board and the district’s teachers agreed on a three-year contract extension two years before the current one expires. The district’s negotiator and the union president said the contract was good for education and finances. The contract includes a step freeze in the first year, a reduction in raises for teachers at the top pay scale of more than $600 each year and more than doubling the teacher’s health care co-pay during the life of the contract. The contract will expire at the end of the 2015-16 school year. “These are difficult times for school districts across the commonwealth. Our budgets continue to shrink while our costs continue to rise,” said Gwen Walker, the district's fiscal services director. “This …
