The Keystone Oaks School District provided tips for avoiding the flu this season.
The flu has been in the news a lot lately. Fortunately, according to the Keystone Oaks School District website, it hasn't hit local students or school staff as hard as it's hit others in the area. "The buildings work year-round to educate students and staff about good habits that help prevent the spread of any illnesses," said school nurse Beth Woodward, as she is quoted in the press release. Pennsylvania is reporting high influenza activity, according to the state health department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Allegheny County certainly isn't immune from the widespead outbreak of influenza reported by the Pennsylvania Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Allegheny County Health Department reports four local deaths in the last few weeks have been attributed to the influenza Type A virus. All four deaths have been patients 65 years or older, with the oldest victim 98 years old, according to Dr. Jim Lando, acting director of the department's Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. "Influenza does take people each year," he said. "That's why we do recommend that people get vaccinated." The Center for Disease Control reports that significant increases in flu activity in the U.S. in the last two weeks indicate that an early flu season is under way—and that means in Dormont and Brookline, now might be the time to finally get that flu shot we've been putting off. Flu shots high-dose flu shots and intradermal flu shots are offered at CVS pharmacies through March 31. Most insurances are accepted. The flu season appears to be starting earlier than usual this year. Find out what a St. Clair Hospital doctor says you can do to protect yourself from the flu.
The flu season appears to be starting earlier than usual this year, according to a doctor at St. Clair Hospital’s emergency room. Dr. Emily Brown said she’s seen an “uptick” in the patients coming to the hospital with flu-like symptoms over the past couple of weeks. She estimated there have been 70 cases so far, compared to none by this time last year. “We’ve definitely seen an uptick in the number of patients being diagnosed with the flu,” she said. “The flu season was just later in the year last year. We’ll see if it’ll be worse, or if it’s just earlier.” There is no shortage in the flu vaccine, so she suggested that everyone get a flu shot this year. State Rep. Dan Deasy, who represents Dormont, will host his annual Senior Fair this Friday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Guardian Angels Church on Logue Street in Pittsburgh. Flu shots will be available for free to seniors who present a valid Medicare Part B card. The shots are available for $28 for those without Medicare. Vendors also will be at the fair with information about programs and services available to senior citizens. Light refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be awarded.
