UPDATE: Fire at Dormont Elementary

A fire broke out Friday evening at the Dormont Elementary School playground.

A fire that broke out Friday evening at Dormont Elementary School is under investigation. According to the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page, the fire department responded to a large fire at the Dormont Elementary School playground around 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, and were able to contain and extinguish the flames before they spread to the building. Keystone Oaks communications director Jim Cromie was on scene as of 8:20 p.m. Friday night. Cromie said an arson unit was on scene looking at the damage, and that Superintendent William Stropkaj was on his way to the school to talk to employees and emergency personnel. No Power Outages, Damage Reported in Dormont

A member of the Dormont Fire Department said given the amount of rain, last night was pretty quiet.

The amount of rain seems to be the only thing that made last night different from any other night in Dormont, at least for local emergency responders. No reports of flooding, downed trees or downed power lines were reported to local emergency departments, said Jim Medsger, a desk officer for the Dormont Police Department and a member of the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department. "We had two calls where wires were sparking, but Duquesne Light came out rather quickly and got it taken care of," Medsger said. "Those were the only calls the fire department was called out for overnight." Both incidents of sparking wires occurred in the 3200 block of Eastmont Avenue. Medsger said Duquesne Light arrived quickly to correct the first problem, and was …

Patch Poll: How Did You Carry Trick-or-Treat Candy?

Details about local trick-or-treat times in Dormont and Brookline.

What did you use to carry candy on trick-or-treat night? When I was a kid, it was mostly pillowcases or grocery bags, with the occasional pumpkin basket thrown in. Next Wednesday, we'll get to see what kids are carrying these days (my guess is that it hasn't changed much). Trick-or-treat in Dormont is Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. Members of the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department and the Dormont Police Department will be posted at intersections throughout the borough, making sure all goblins and princess brides are safe in their quests for candy. The City of Pittsburgh, including Brookline and Beechview, also will hold trick-or-treat on Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This Saturday, Oct. 27, Brookline Rec Center is holding a Halloween Party from …

Dormont residents can have a few drinks for a cause this Saturday.
