A band of local “good guys” will headline the Dormont Street Fair this year. The Good Guys Band is Joe Morrone and his son Mike, Jim Hedge and Ed Palma—all Dormont natives and Keystone Oaks graduates, and all happy to be performing at one of their hometown’s favorite festivals. “It’s very surreal for us,” Hedge said. “We played back when we were younger, but I think the only time we played in Dormont was for the Fourth of July at the pavilion in Dormont Park when we were in high school.” Hedge still lives in Dormont, but Palma now lives in the North Hills and Morrone lives in Baldwin. The Good Guys Duo, an offshoot of the band that features Hedge and Morrone, performed at the Taste of Dormont on Sept. 15. Palma, Morrone and Hedge are …

After filing a right-to-know request with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, Councilwoman Joan Hodson has some questions about how the Beer Garden ever got approved in the first place.
The Beer Garden has been eliminated from Saturday’s Dormont Street Fair but questions are still bubbling about whether it should have ever been permitted in 2009 and 2010. Dormont Council voted 6-1 in August, with only Councilman Drew Lehman opposed, not to allow the Beer Garden at this weekend's event. Council took its vote after two bar owners complained about revenues they lost because of the borough-endorsed Beer Garden, which sold craft beers, competing with their businesses. The first year (2009), the Beer Garden raised money for the borough recreation department but the second year (2010), after the borough was denied a special state permit to serve alcohol only several days before the event, Friends of Dormont Pool stepped in as an…

Organizers in Dormont are hoping for better weather this weekend for the 5th Annual Dormont Street Fair and Music Festival. “So far the forecast looks pretty good,” said Dormont Recreation Director Gregor Saulsbery. “But the show will go on, rain or shine. So far in the past, we’ve been pretty lucky.” The fair will take place Saturday, October 8 from 4 to 11p.m. along the Potomac Avenue business district. For the event, Potomac Avenue will be closed between Belrose and West Liberty Avenues from Noon until Midnight on Saturday. Headlining this year’s festival is Dormont’s own Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers. “We are looking forward to returning to the Dormont Street Fair this year,” said Grushecky. “It was one of our favorite shows of …

Even though this year's Dormont Street Fair offering has been canceled, the controversy continues.
Though Dormont Council voted 6-1 earlier this month to eliminate the Beer Garden from this year's Dormont Street Fair on Oct. 8, the controversy about it continued at Monday night's agenda meeting. At least two local bar owners lobbied council at this month's voting meeting to remove the Beer Garden from the annual fair because they said it has cost them thousands of dollars in business. At that meeting other residents and borough officials said they did not agree with the borough-sanctioned alcohol sales. Councilman Drew Lehman, who was the lone vote against discontinuing the Beer Garden, noted that comments on the story about council's vote on Patch had been 3-1 in support of the Beer Garden, which raised money for the borough recreation…
