State Has Money for Dormont Library, Brookline Chamber and You

The Pennsylvania Treasury's Bureau of Unclaimed Property lists local organizations and businesses with money due them—and there might be some out there for you, too.

Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents and recovered stolen property.  Most of this unclaimed property is owed to individual residents. (Read below to find out how to search for yourself or for a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups, and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. Poetry Contest: New and Aspiring Poets Welcome

Dormont Public Library is hosting a poetry contest for all age groups, now through April 4.

Aspiring poets are invited to submit their work to Dormont Public Library for a poetry contest being held now through April 4. Poems can be written in any style, and about any subject. Poems must be original, and be no more than 20 lines long. Authors will retain all rights to their work. Two prizes will be awarded in each of the following age groups: Entries should be sent to Dormont Public Library at 2950 West Liberty Avenue, Dormont, Pa., 15216. For contest guidelines, see the Dormont Public Library website. Local judges will be selected based on expertise. Teens Try to Pawn Dormont Library DVDs

Dormont police blotter, Jan. 4 to Jan. 11.

Charges are pending against three teenagers who allegedly stole DVDs from Dormont Public Library, then tried to pawn them for cash. On Jan. 8, library employees reported to Dormont police that a number of DVDs had been stolen from the shelves. Police determined that the DVDs had been sold to MIB Entertainment on West Liberty Avenue, and identified the three teenagers who had pawned them. Library Director Cindy D'Agostino said the items have not yet been returned to the library. The teens have not yet been charged. Dormont police Sgt. James Briglia said the investigation is ongoing and possible charges and restitution are pending. Taste of Dormont Has Reds, Whites and Blues

Saturday's Taste of Dormont will include wine and beer tastings, as well as local music.

This Saturday, Dormont will celebrate the reds, whites and blues ... in terms of wine and music, that is. The sixth annual Taste of Dormont will be held Saturday, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., under the tent at Dormont Recreation Center on Dormont Avenue. Wine and beer from Pennsylvania wineries and breweries will be available, as will food samples from Cain's Saloon, Atria's, Giovanni's Pizza & Pasta and many more. Tickets are available for $27.50 at Dormont Public Library and Dormont Municipal Center. Tickets also can be bought online at the Dormont Main Street website. Own the Night at Dormont Library

Dormont Library’s summer reading program is all about dreaming.

Dormont Library will enter a new chapter in summer reading programs with this year’s nighttime and dream-based themes. Library Director Cindy D’Agostino said the themes have something from all ages, and she’s looking forward to seeing how children and young adults make the program work for them. The summer theme for elementary school children is “Dream Big.” “We’re taking it from the nighttime dreaming angle, which also could lead to dreams about their futures,” D’Agostino said. Story times, crafts, a program about star constellations and a special visit from the Aviary’s owl are part of the program.
