A Brookline man faces charges after police said he attacked a Dormont business owner with a broom handle on May 6. Mahdi Ghasempour, 51, of Brookline, was charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person after an incident in the 1400 block of Potomac Avenue just before 11 a.m. According to the report by Dormont police, Ghasempour was dressed only in plaid shorts, with no shirt, socks or shoes, and was carrying a five-foot long broom handle, with which he allegedly chased and attempted to strike the owner of Woven Rug Gallery. The McCormick-Dorman VFW made a donation that allowed Dormont police to buy several equipment items.
McCormick-Dorman VFW Post #694 frequently makes donations to foster community betterment, and that was just the idea behind a January donation to Dormont Police Department. The VFW donated $3,000 to the police department, allowing the department to outfit its Chevy Tahoe with new equipment. “The borough bought the Tahoe and lights, but with this money, we’ve been able to outfit this to make it a command-type vehicle,” said Dormont police Sgt. James Burke. The Tahoe now carries a number of flashlights with battery chargers, an incident board, and a tactical entry kit that includes an ax and wire cutters, among other tools. A Beechview man was arrested following a fight at Jamison’s Bar that resulted in a number of injuries. Officers from Dormont, Mt. Lebanon and Castle Shannon, as well as Medical Rescue Team South Authority responded to the bar at 1:30 a.m. for a report of a fight with injuries. According to the police report, David Domostoy, 28, was refused service at the bar because he appeared to be highly intoxicated when he arrived. The bar’s owner told police that after he was refused, Domostoy began attacking the owner, and other patrons. Police said that when a patron attempted to help the bar owner restrain Domostoy, Domostoy threw the patron through the glass front door of the bar, shattering the door and injuring the patron. Dormont police responded to multiple incidents at Vasta Lounge on West Liberty Avenue between April 27 and April 28. Officers on patrol in the area at 2:15 a.m. on April 27 saw a fight in front of the bar. Two men—identified as Shandrew Vaughn, 35, of Pittsburgh and Carlies Womack, 34, also of Pittsburgh—were arrested after police said they refused to leave the scene, and yelled obscenities at officers. According to the police reports, Vaughn attempted to start fights with bar patrons while in the presence of police. He was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Womack was cited for public drunkenness. Dormont police are asking drivers to remember that parking is not allowed on West Liberty Avenue during rush hour.
Dormont police are again warning drivers not to park on West Liberty Avenue during rush hour, after seeing an increase in the number of citations issued for the offense in the past few weeks. "It seems to be happening more often again, and when people do that it creates a major traffic problem," said Dormont police Sgt. James Burke. Burke said the police have had a number of vehicles towed from West Liberty because they were parked on the street during rush hour. Burke said the quickest way to report illegally parked cars is to call 911 and tell the responder it is not an emergency. Dormont police are investigating a theft-from-vehicle case that occurred in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Avenue. According to the police report, a car was parked on a parking pad in that block when someone stole a backpack containing a laptop computer from inside the car. The owner told police the theft likely occurred between 11 p.m. on April 13 and 11 a.m. on April 14. Police Chief Michael Bisignani told Dormont-Brookline Patch the number of theft-from-vehicle cases typically increases when the weather improves, and warned that residents should be careful to keep vehicles locked. In two separate incidents last Sunday, alcohol-related arrests were made on the LRT tracks in Dormont.
Alcohol played a role in two separate arrests near the LRT tracks in Dormont on April 14. Just before 2:30 a.m., a Dormont officer on patrol in the 1400 block of Dormont Avenue reportedly saw a Jeep driving the wrong way down the one-way street. According the police report, while the officer was turning his car around to follow the Jeep, the driver made a left-hand turn onto the Port Authority tracks and became stuck. The officer notified the Port Authority Police, who arrived on scene and placed the driver, Simon Mason, 29, of Pittsburgh, under arrest for driving under the influence. Thursday morning Seton LaSalle High School students will view the dramatic aftermath of an alcohol-involved car crash, according to The Almanac. The mock accident will be put on by police from Mt. Lebanon, Castle Shannon and Dormont, the Mt. Lebanon Fire Department, Medical Rescue Team South, LifeFlight and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office to teach the students about unsafe driving practices. The presentation is part of Mt. Lebanon police department's "Survival 101" and is sponsored by the Students Against Destructive Decisions at Keystone Oaks and Seton LaSalle High schools, according to the newspaper.

Dormont police are investigating a theft-from-vehicle incident that occurred last week in the 3000 block of Wainbell Avenue. According to the police report, a purse containing a driver's license, other identification, checks, two credit cards and various accessories was stolen from the car. The victim told police the theft likely happened between 2 p.m. on April 7 and 11 a.m. on April 8. It is unknown whether the car was locked at the time of the theft, but no signs of forced entry were found. Police are investigating the incident. Those with information can contact Dormont police.
