Shovlin Dancers Place Ninth at World Championship

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance competed March 29 in the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship.

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance took their talents from a studio in Dormont Municipal Center to the world stage last weekend. The troupe performed at the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship in Boston, and placed ninth out of 13 groups. Instructor Sheila Shovlin created and choreographed the narrative drama the troupe performed—a unique performance, considering that many competitors at the Championship perform solo, rather than in a group. Shovlin's sister, instructor Liz Shovlin Grinko, said considering the level of competition the troupe was up against, ninth place is not bad at all. "They were very happy with that," she said. "We were competing with dancers from higher brackets who were there for solos as well, so you had …

Dormont's Irish Dance Academy Headed to World Championship

Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance will compete in the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship in Boston on Friday.

Six minutes. It’s enough time for one dance, and it’s all the time one Dormont troupe will have to impress judges at the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship this weekend. The team from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance is one of 14 groups competing in their category Friday, and instructor Liz Shovlin Grinko said her dancers—ranging in age from 10 to 18—are ready. “The kids are excited about the experience,” she said. “They’ve had a lot of fun, and like in anything, they support each other as a team.” The experience is one many dancers never get to take part in, and the world stage will be quite different from their home studio on the lower level of Dormont Municipal Center. In the world of Irish dance, this competition is the highest level, …

Dormont Begins Comprehensive Plan Process

Input from residents will be increasingly important as the year-long process continues, local officials said.

Dormont Borough officials last week began the process of developing a comprehensive plan for the borough, a project that hasn’t been completed since 1995. “This is day three,” said Scott Page, in an interview with Dormont-Brookline Patch on Thursday. “This is about as early in the process as it gets. This is the fact-finding stage, where we get to know Dormont, collect available data and put together our own.” Page is an urban designer and planner, and founding principal of Philadelphia-based Interface Studio. The company has done work in the Pittsburgh and Chicago areas, and will be leading Dormont’s comprehensive plan process. Page and his team were camped out in Dormont Municipal Center for much of last week, interviewing staff, council…
