'Dormont Memories' Collection Growing at Historical Society

Dormont Historical Society is collecting Dormont Memories—essays from residents past and present—through Sept. 1.

When Dormont Historical Society began collecting "Dormont Memories" earlier this year, its members were hoping to get a look at the way Dormont used to be, and how residents are enjoying it now. They have, but they're still looking for more to fill an anthology the organization hopes to publish professionally next year. Organizer Carrie Samarin left the following comment on the Dormont-Brookline Patch event listing for the project: I believe we have about 30 writings so far. These are valuable memories that will forever be part of Dormont History via the Historical Society. Some of the memories that I've enjoyed reading include: a power outage at a KO Football game in 1969/70; buying a first home in Dormont, that interesting line called …

Historical Society Collecting ‘Dormont Memories’

Dormont Historical Society is collecting memories of Dormont for an anthology the groups hopes to publish next year.

Do you remember watching movies at Dormont’s Hollywood Theater … in the 1950s? Where did you hang out after the bell rang at Dormont High School? What do you love about the borough now? Dormont Historical Society wants to hear your story. The historical society is collecting “memories from Dormont” for an anthology the organization hopes to publish professionally next year. “This is consistent with our mission to collect and preserve,” said Marianne Harbaugh Davis, a historical society member who serves on the editorial board for the anthology. “As you can see, our space here is full of beautiful things, but we like to collect memories, too.” In 2008, the historical society worked with Arcadia Publishing to publish Images of America: …

Overdue Library Books Returned to Dormont After 88 Years

A man bringing books to Dormont Historical Society had no idea he was returning library books.

A man bringing a box of books to Dormont Historical Society has no idea he was returning long-overdue library books—88 years overdue, to be exact. According to a report from CBS Pittsburgh, Paul Kaminski, who was raised in Dormont, drove the books back to Dormont from Arizona, where a cousin had been keeping them. A look through the box revealed books that should have been returned to the Dormont school library—formerly located in the Dormont Municipal Center, where the Historical Society is housed—in 1924. The Dormont Historical Society added the books to their extensive collection of Dormont memorabilia. The Dormont Historical Society is open to the public Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For the full article from CBS Pittsburgh, click …

'My Tale of Two Cities' Comes to Hollywood Theater on Friday

After playing in theaters across North America, Carl Kurlander's movie about Pittsburgh returns home for one night only.

After a tour of more than 25 cities, "My Tale of Two Cities," the funny, hopeful movie about Pittsburgh's comeback, will return for a special screening at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont. This tale is about the once-great industrial giant that built America with its steel, conquered polio and invented everything from aluminum to the Big Mac—and has, against all odds, reinvented itself for a new age.  After the screening, a panel discussion about Dormont's and Pittsburgh's own comeback stories will include state Sen. Wayne Fontana (D-42nd District); Louise Sturgess, executive director of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation; Muriel Moreland, Dormont Historical Society president; Kelly James of Sugar …
