Two Dormont Elementary students read essays honoring family members during the school's Veterans Day ceremony on Friday.
Dormont Elementary School honored local veterans on Friday during a Veterans Day ceremony. The ceremony included a tribute to local veterans, several of whom attended and were recognized during the ceremony, a video featuring photos of local veterans who did not attend the ceremony, patriotic songs, and speeches and the reading of essays by two students about veterans in their own families. Fourth and fifth-graders at Dormont Elementary take part in an annual essay contest where they are asked to pay tribute to one particular veteran. Essay winners received a cash prize of $20. The fourth-grade winner is Maria Fratangelo, who wrote about her father, Peter Fratangelo. The fifth-grade winner is Sophie Vavrock, who wrote about her great-uncle…

Dormont Elementary held a first-ever Science Olympiad on Monday.
Dormont Elementary students have conclusive evidence that science is, in fact, a lot of fun. The school’s first Science Olympiad, a day of science-based activities that challenged students both physically and mentally, was held Monday. Aiken Elementary has done a Science Olympiad for the past two years. Dormont Elementary principal George Shevchik said former Keystone Oaks Superintendent William Urbanek wanted to hold the event district-wide. So, when teachers Lori DeMartino and Kim Puffer said they were willing to organize it at Dormont Elementary he was happy to let them do it. Students from science classes at Keystone Oaks High School, former Keystone Oaks teachers and parents volunteered to help with the event. It took a full year for …

Board President Gary Alward says rumors that the district will hire a part-time principal for Dormont Elementary are not true.
Parents at Thursday’s Keystone Oaks School Board meeting said they were concerned about a rumor that had started—one that board President Gary Alward said is not true. Dormont Elementary parent Kristen Pauchnik told the board there had been a lot of discussion among parent groups about what would happen with the principal's position at the school. Her concern, and that of several others at the meeting, was that little information has been released about filling the position of principal at Dormont Elementary. Some parents also had heard rumors that a part-time principal would be hired to fill the position. The position is vacant because Principal George Shevchik retired earlier this year. Shevchik is continuing to serve as principal at the…

George Shevchik—the only principal Dormont Elementary has ever had—is retiring today.
George Shevchik always knew he wanted to be a teacher, but he hadn’t planned on becoming a principal. He’s glad his career took him that direction, because it led to what he said is the best job in education he’s ever had. Shevchik, Dormont Elementary’s first and only principal since it opened in 1995, is retiring after 18 years with Keystone Oaks School District. “Will I miss it? Yes,” Shevchik said. “I will have to go through withdrawal. This is a top-notch elementary school. I have no regrets here.” Shevchik’s official retirement date is today, March 9, but he will continue to serve as the Dormont Elementary principal through the end of the school year. He never wanted to leave the school or the students mid-year, he said. He has a …

Wednesday’s meeting at Dormont Elementary will focus on helping your child cope with school anxiety.
A program at Dormont Elementary School this Wednesday, Jan. 18, will provide parents with the tools to understand students with school-based anxiety, and to help them cope with it. The Keystone Oaks Partners in Learning Organization will hold the meeting at 7 p.m. in the library of Dormont Elementary. Nahir Gordon and Jessica Maher—both therapists with Wesley Spectrum School Based Services who currently provide services within the Keystone Oaks School District—will provide facts about school-based anxiety, as well as tools and strategies for helping students cope. “We thought that since out own mental health therapists deal a lot with these kids, they would be best to come in and talk about how we can help,” said Suzanne Lochie, …

Nursery school lessons provide learning environment for students in both preschool and high school.
The lessons learned in the Keystone Oaks Nursery School aren’t just for kids. The nursery school—which is enrolling now—is part of the child development classes taught by Maria Dayka and led by high school students who aspire to become teachers themselves. “It’s a way to test the waters to see if this is what they want to do,” Dayka said. “Quite a few do become teachers, but we’ve also had students go into other professions like nursing, where the training still helps.” Morning and afternoon classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:50 to 11 a.m. and from 12:20 to 1:45 p.m. Dayka observes every class, but high school students mainly teach the lessons. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the high school students meet with Dayka to discuss…

John DeLallo said that as a veteran, he's honored to attend the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Dormont Elementary. But in his opinion, he said, the ceremony really serves as a learning opportunity for the students. “Any guy here will tell you the same thing,” he said. “’I didn’t do anything heroic, but I served in the company of heroes.’ Some of those heroes didn’t come back.” DeLallo, who served in the Air Force from 1968 to 1989, attended the elementary school’s Veterans Day ceremony on Friday morning. First-grade teacher Leslie Holmes said students had been busy working on projects and presentations to honor the veterans, and were excited for the day. This is one of her favorite days at the school, too, she said. “I love this day,” …

When that little girl read her essay, I found it very difficult to hold it all together. Thanks for posting the video, but you owe me for a half a box of Kleenex. Later, in the library, she showed me a photo of her great great uncle Glenn Lee Fullerton, framed with a patch from his unit in Vietnam. Thankfully, her family has kept the memory of Glenn Lee Fullerton alive, and as long as someone …   more ›
