Jessica Favo won a bicycle and helmet as part of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's ThinkFirst for Kids & Teens initiative.

A Dormont Elementary School third-grader won a new bicycle and helmet as part of an initiative that aims to educate children about bicycle safety. Jessica Favo was randomly selected as a winner of a new, hot-pink bicycle and helmet as part of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's ThinkFirst for Kids & Teens initiative. The program's coordinator, Darius Carlins, has been presenting new bikes to children since 1999. He estimates that the program, which is funded by Kohl's Department Stores, gives away approximately 30 new bicycles each year locally and hundreds more nationally. Costanzo confirmed Wednesday that this is an arson case, and that those responsible will face arson-related charges. "There’s really not a whole lot more to it," Costanzo said. "This appears to be a one-time incident, with some kids who went up there and set the fire, and left the scene." Keystone Oaks School District released a statement Tuesday, Dec. 11 that two minors had confessed to setting the blaze. Their names and ages are not being released. Costanzo said one of the minors is a student in the Keystone Oaks School …

As everyone who has any compassion in them, I grieve for the people involved in this tragedy. To each his own as to how to deal with this, whether it's with prayer or whatever. I also feel extreme anger at the people who make it their life's work to make sure that these types of weapons are available to anyone who wants one. Those that complain about a $5 fee attached to gun purchases, who want …   more ›

Dormont Elementary Presents 'Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus'

The elementary school will present the beloved Christmas tale on Thursday evening.

In 1897, 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the New York Sun newspaper asking a simple question: Is there a Santa Claus? The editor's answer—"Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus"—has been told and retold in storybooks and cartoons, and now Dormont Elementary School will present the live-action play. "Yes Virginia: The Musical" will run at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13 at Dormont Elementary School. Dormont Elementary was one of 100 schools across the nation that received a $1,000 grant from Macy's to help with the production costs of putting on the play. Macy's also made the script and musical score for the play available to the schools for free. First-year music teacher Rob Naser applied for the grant and is …

Fire Does $25,000 Damage at Dormont Elementary

An update about the fire at Dormont Elementary School on Friday, Nov. 30.

A fire that broke out on the playground behind Dormont Elementary School on Friday, Nov. 30 did about $25,000 worth of damage to the property, Dormont fire Chief Jeff Arnold said. The fire damaged a play structure and bench, as well as the rubber mulch surfacing on half of the playground. Although there is smoke damage on the brick wall of the building up to the second floor, Arnold said there is no structural damage to the building. The call came in to Dormont Volunteer Fire Department at 5:50 p.m. and the department had it under control within 15 minutes, Arnold said. Fire departments from Mt. Lebanon and Glendale assisted. Arnold said the department can’t yet confirm that this is an arson case. Because crews on scene were not able to …

Police Warn Drivers, Walkers to Obey Dormont Elementary Crosswalks

Dormont police are warning drivers to obey crosswalks, stop signs and designated drop-off areas after receiving complaints.

Dormont police are asking drivers to be more vigilant around Dormont Elementary School, and to obey posted crosswalks, drop-off areas and stop signs. Police Sgt. James Burke said the police recently received complaints of drivers who are not obeying the 15mph speed limit, and are not stopping at crosswalks during morning and afternoon hours when children are crossing the street to and from school. They've also received complaints that people crossing the street are not crossing at the crosswalks, and that parents are not using designated drop-off areas to drop off and pick up their children. "There are two crosswalks up there, but people are cutting across the block rather than using them," Burke said. "It's there for the benefit of the …
