The winners of the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department Raffle have been announced! The first-place winner—Richard Hamm of Pittsburgh’s North Side—decided to take the cash payoff instead of the car, and walked away with a whopping $18,000. In an email to Dormont-Brookline Patch, Hamm said he is extremely grateful to be a winner and considers it a blessing. He said he typically spends about $100 a year of raffle tickets, and that it's worth it to donate to the fire department. Lauren Wonderly of Pittsburgh was the second-place winner, receiving $2,000 in cash. The third place winner, Jonna Swanson, is from Dormont, and received a $1,000 prize. Winners were first announced following the fireworks at Dormont Day on the 4th of July. Since the …

A special needs child was hit with a firecracker on Dormont Day.
A 5-year-old girl is recovering after being hit with a firecracker at Castle Park on July 4. Dormont Day activities were wrapping up when Dormont police responded to the playground at 10 p.m. for a report that a child had been hit when a group of teenagers began throwing firecrackers. The child is a special needs student. Officer Don Kelly said the child sustained no physical injuries, but that she is prone to seizures and suffered three of them following the incident. Kelly said that when police arrived on scene, the group of teenage boys was trying to leave the park. The boys ignored several commands from police to stop, and officers had to chase them down. The victim’s mother and two other witnesses identified the teens as the ones who …

July 4 was also Dormont Day. Did you take photos? Share them!
It was a year shy from there being a centennial celebration of Dormont Day on Wednesday but the Dormont community gathered at Dormont Park once more with families and friends. “It’s like Groundhog Day for us,” said Diane Veri, chairperson of Dormont Day. “Once a year we all come out to celebrate.” For some children, this was their first Dormont Day celebration. Others, however, have celebrated this event on a number of times. The events held at Dormont Day included grab bags, foot races, game and food booths, live music by “Daniels and McClain,” “Silent Partner,” and “No Bad Ju Ju,” Zambelli International Fireworks, and the Dormont Volunteer Fire Department Raffle. Dormont Day has always been a community effort, going strong for nearly 100…

The Zambelli family dazzles Pittsburgh with their pyrotechnics.
Zambelli fireworks have lit up the Pittsburgh skyline for years. Whether it was shooting fireworks off the United Steel Workers building, creating excitement at Beaver County BOOM! or diverting us at the Steelers games—whatever the occasion, they’ve been the center of our celebrations. But they aren’t just Pennsylvania’s little secret. In fact, over 800 skies will be illuminated by Zambelli Fireworks this Fourth of July season. The New Castle-based company started out small in the 1800s as the hobby of Antonio Zambelli, an Italian immigrant, who wrote down his recipes for fireworks in a little black book and worked in the steel mills by day. He shared his passion for his art with his sons who passed their knowledge to their sons. Over a …

Dormont Day is quickly approaching its centennial, and although plans for this, the 99th year, are in place, the committee already is looking ahead to make the 100th year especially memorable. But to make this July 4—and especially next year's holiday—special, more donations and volunteer help are needed. Dormont Day Committee Chairperson Diane Veri said a private committee always has organized the event in Dormont Park, and it’s always been funded mainly through donations. The committee doesn’t want that to change, she said. Help from the community makes this day a truly community-oriented event, something that everyone can take part in and enjoy. Many members of the Dormont Day committee have been involved for 20 years or longer, and …

Diane Veri's career started by teaching toy store customers how to use an Apple II. She's now a Golden Apple winner.
When Diane Veri left St. Bernard’s school in Mt. Lebanon for a fire drill in March, she expected to see students and fellow teachers outside—but she didn’t expect them to be cheering for her. The technology teacher had won the Diocese of Pittsburgh Golden Apple Award for 2012, and the St. Bernard community held the mock fire drill to surprise her with the news. “I was overwhelmed, to say the least,” Veri said. “It is, truly, an honor.” This is the first time Veri has won the Golden Apple, and she is the first St. Bernard’s teacher to win the award in about nine years. It’s also her first time to be nominated. Not too shabby for a technology teacher who hadn’t intended on teaching technology. Veri’s first “tech” job was at a toy store in …
