Dormont Council plans to adopt the 2013 budget, as well as make several other votes at its meeting today, Monday, Dec. 3.
Much of the agenda for Dormont Council's meeting today, Monday, concerns the 2013 budget. Council will meet today, Monday Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at Dormont Municipal Center, and plans to adopt the borough's 2013 budget, with tax adjustments to account for recent property reassessments. Dormont Council will hold a non-voting agenda meeting today, Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Dormont Municipal Center. Part I of the agenda package is attached to this article as a PDF document. Council meets today, Monday, at 7 p.m.
Dormont Council plans to vote today on several recommendations proposed by the Traffic and Parking Planning Commission, to include removing the borough’s ability to lease parking spaces to business owners. Last week, George Pitcher of the Planning Commission told council the commission recommended that the leasing arrangement not be renewed or considered effective after the first six months it was enforced. He said members had spoken with business owners, residents and the police department about the issue before making that decision. “We felt that if it continued, there would be a number of parking spaces that would be taken away from the other business patrons and the public for parking,” he said. The new borough solicitor and interim borough manager attended Monday’s Dormont Council meeting.
For the first time in more than a month, all seats were filled at the Dormont Council meeting. “You’ll all recognize that there are a few new faces here with us tonight,” said council President Bill McCartney. “We now have a full complement.” New borough Solicitor John Rushford, of the firm Dodaro, Matta and Cambest, attended Monday’s meeting, as did Dave Soboslay of the management firm Delta Development. Delta Development was hired as interim borough manager, and Soboslay will be the borough’s main point of contact until a permanent manager is hired. Dormont Council voted Monday to form a committee to assist the borough with decision regarding #1 Cochran’s development proposal.
A steering committee of Dormont citizens, business owners and a local church will be formed to assist Dormont council members in a discussion of #1 Cochran’s proposed development plan. Dormont Council voted Monday night to form the committee, which would include business owners in the area near the Cochran Nissan location on West Liberty Avenue, citizens living in the area, and representatives from Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. “I know there’s once again been some rumors circulating, but we have not sold, traded or even talked to Cochran about their proposal,” said council President Bill McCartney. Two motions regarding Pitcher Park were on Monday’s agenda, but neither passed.
Another Dormont Council meeting has passed with few answers as to what will become of Pitcher Park Memorial Park. Two motions regarding the park were on Monday’s agenda: one to form a citizens group to propose alternatives to the May 2011 Memorandum of Understanding, and another to authorize the advertisement of an ordinance ratifying the April 5, 2010 motion approving the park passed by the previous council, which resulted in the May 2011 document. Neither passed. Council voted 4-2-1 against forming the committee. Councilwomen Onnie Costanzo and Joan Hodson voted in favor of it, and Gene Barilla abstained from the vote. Dormont Council will hold its regular business meeting today, Monday, at 7 p.m. in the recreation center above Dormont pool. Tonight's meeting agenda includes a motion to appoint a committee of borough citizens to develop and propose alternative to the May 2, 2011 Pitcher Park proposal. Also on the agenda is a motion to appoint a committee of residents and business owners to participate with borough officials in discussions of #1 Cochran's development proposal.
