Dormont Council warns residents that people claiming to be collecting money for the Keystone Oaks band aren’t related to the school district.
Dormont Council warned residents Monday night that door-to-door solicitors claiming to be with the Keystone Oaks marching band aren’t related to the school district at all. Council member Laurie Malka said she received an email from a resident on Monday stating that people had been walking through Dormont and asking for donations, saying they were representatives of the Keystone Oaks band. She said a band director in the school district told her the band does not solicit funds by collecting donations door-to-door. “If anyone comes to your door asking for donations, this is not for the band,” Malka said. “Please do not give them any money.” Check back with Dormont-Brookline Patch for updates as details become available. Dormonters enjoyed cookies with Santa and a tree-lighting ceremony on Saturday evening.
We all know that Santa Claus is very busy this time of year. But, the big guy told us, he’s never too busy for his friends in Dormont! Santa stopped by the Dormont Park Recreation Center on Saturday evening for the borough’s light up night. Nearly two hundred people came out to have their little ones sit on Santa’s lap, get photos taken and enjoy crafts, snacks and various other activities. Popular Christmas tunes played in the background as kids constructed picture frames at the craft table and danced around the room. Cookies were provided by a donation from the Eat'n Park on Banksville Road, and juice pouches were provided by the Banskville Road Supercuts. Supercuts also donated the skill of its stylists. Two stylists were on hand at the…

An activist plans to protest in front of the Dormont Municipal Center against the Allegheny County District Attorney Detective offices there.
Activist Mike Ference will stage the second in a series of “Last Call” protests targeting local institutions and individuals tied to cases involving the abuse of children and young adults on Dec. 5 in Dormont. The protest will take place at 10 a.m. in front of the Allegheny County District Attorney Detectives office at the Dormont Municipal Center. Ference is targeting the detective bureau for failing to take action after he presented detailed information about alleged clergy sex abuse, coverups and other criminal behavior to them in 2007. He had asked that they reopen the attempted murder case involving his son, who was shot and injured on a Serra Catholic High School bus in 1989 by a student who turned the gun on himself and died. "With …

The interim administrative police chief, who submitted his resignation letter Tuesday, talks about the changes he's made to Dormont's police department.
Richard Dwyer knew that his time in Dormont would be short-lived when he accepted the offer to become interim administrative police chief in June. After demoting former Chief Phil Ross in March, council hired Dwyer in June to regain control of the police department, improve public safety and ease tensions between the department and administration. Dwyer had been told the assignment would probably last three to six months. He was chosen because of his experience in law enforcement management. Last month, in an interview with Patch, Dwyer said his time with the borough could be just days or weeks, knowing that some of the council candidates, if elected, planned to return former police Chief Phil Ross to his post. But instead of a new council…
Dwyer's last day of service will be Dec. 14.
Richard Dwyer, who was appointed as interim administrative acting police chief by Dormont Council in July, has resigned. "It's just my time to go," Dwyer said Wednesday morning. Dwyer said that he hand-delivered the resignation letter to council members and Mayor Tom Lloyd yesterday about 4 p.m. Council Vice President Laurie Malka confirmed Tuesday night that the resignation is effective Dec. 30, although his last day in the office will be Dec. 14. When council appointed Dwyer in June, he was told he might be needed for a three-to-six month period to help ease tensions between the administration and borough police. What Dwyer found was a political atmosphere where he said he felt undermined by Lloyd and antagonized by residents. "The …
