History Professor Helps Make Mexi Casa a Craft Beer Hotspot

Ali Wyrostek has worked to bring some new and unique brands into the Dormont restaurant that are tough to find elsewhere.

By day, she’s a history professor at Westmoreland County Community College. By night, Ali Wyrostek is crafting Dormont’s Mexi Casa into a hot spot for specialty beers, local brews and rare brands. “I would have meetings with [representatives] from brewing companies and they would ask where the craft beer places are around Dormont and Mt. Lebanon,” Wyrostek said. “We thought, there really aren’t that many. We could make a name here.” Wyrostek has enjoyed craft beer from the start. She earned both her bachelors and masters degrees from Slippery Rock University, and said she never settled for the cheap stuff in a college town that boasted microbreweries close to campus.  She’s worked for Mexi Casa on-and-off for eight years, and took over …

Great to hear! Mad Mex, whether technically a "chain" or not, feels like a chain to me. Although I do think it is ok, I would love to try the local Mexi-Casa and will make sure to do so in the near future.   more ›

Brew Fest to Benefit Veterans Memorial

Mt. Lebanon event will offer samples of craft beer from local breweries

Tickets are still available for Mt. Lebanon’s second annual Brew Fest. The event on Sept. 17 runs from 4 to 7 p.m. in Clearview Common along Washington Road in uptown Mt. Lebanon. Proceeds from the Brew Fest will benefit the new Mt. Lebanon Veterans Memorial that is being built in the township. This year’s event will include craft beers from several local breweries. There will also be live music from Uptown Rhythm and Brass. Raffle tickets will be sold with the main prizes including a ski trip to Steamboat Spring in Colorado, jewelry and a gas grill. Dan Gigler, who is on the Veterans Memorial committee, said the event is a good chance for people to enjoy the evening and sample different beers from local breweries. “It’s a really nice, …

This is a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. It is a very well run event for a great cause. Dormont residents can take a nice walk to Clearview Commons or take the T to avoid getting behind the wheel.   more ›
