Penn’s Corner Brings the Farm to the Neighborhoods

The deadline is April 2 for those who want to participate in the Penn’s Corner CSA program.

Spring means fresh fruits and veggies are available again, and the Penn’s Corner Farm Alliance is helping provide the best of locally-grown products to your neighborhoods. Penn’s Corner, a coop of family-owned farms, offers opportunities for consumers to get fresh produce through its farm share and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. Most farms are located in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Consumers don’t have to be a member to take advantage of the farm share, but they do have to be a member to participate in the weekly CSA program, in which boxes of fresh produce are delivered to pickup locations throughout the area. Dormont Residents Bringing Community Supported Agriculture To Borough

Community supported agriculture relies on people contracting with a distributor working with local farmers and food producers to provide weekly fresh food deliveries.

A group of Dormont residents wants to bring a community supported agriculture venture to the borough. This time, they hope it takes root. Community supported agriculture relies on people contracting with a distributor working with local farmers and food producers to provide weekly fresh food deliveries. “You’re supporting local farms and better produce. It’s just a way to buy directly from the farmer,” said Mary Jo Maggio. “If you have the farmers bring it to you and it’s fresh and yummy, it’s a nice deal,” she said. Maggio said she believes Dormont is ripe for a CSA. “People don’t have a lot of room to plant stuff. It’s not like you can grow a big huge vegetable patch every summer,” she said. One minor correction--I participated in the CSA last year but the former Recreation Direction, Juliet Cameron, along with her assistant Jenny Chormanski were instrumental in bringing the CSA to Dormont and for bringing more vendors to the Farmer's Market.
