Dormont Council voted to move forward with a business plan for West Liberty Avenue, but the plan still is not final.
Dormont Council voted Tuesday to move forward with a business plan for West Liberty Avenue proposed by #1 Cochran representatives in February. Council voted 4-3 to move forward with its third option for working with #1 Cochran's plan, which includes completing a land swap with the automotive company and implementing a TIF district in the borough. Councilmen John Maggio and Eugene Barilla, and councilwoman Laurie Malka voted "no" to moving forward with that option, citing concerns over parking issues that could arise or be made worse while construction at the Cochran Nissan site is in progress. Written answers to questions asked about the #1 Cochran business proposal were posted this week.
At last week's informational meeting about the business plan proposed by #1 Cochran, Dormont Borough manager Jeff Naftal said written answers to questions asked at the meeting would be posted publicly. This week, the borough delivered. A document posted on the home page of the Dormont Borough website details answers to questions asked by borough residents and business owners regarding the #1 Cochran proposal. Dormont business owners and residents shared thoughts and concerns at Wednesday's informational meeting regarding #1 Cochran's proposed West Liberty Avenue business plan.
Dormont business owners and residents gave mixed reviews of the options the borough presented Wednesday for working with the West Liberty Avenue business plan proposed by #1 Cochran earlier this year. In February, #1 Cochran proposed a business plan that includes land swaps with Dormont Borough, as well as improvements to West Liberty Avenue. The land swap, however, would involve #1 Cochran taking ownership of the triangle-shaped parking lot at the corner of West Liberty Avenue and McFarland Road in exchange for land it currently owns—a move some said could have serious negative consequences for business owners in that block of West Liberty Avenue. Dormont Council, as well as about 25 citizens and small business owners, met Wednesday to review options for the much-discussed West Liberty Avenue business plan proposed in February by #1 Cochran. The plan #1 Cochran proposed in February included the following: Three options in response to #1 Cochran's proposed business plan were discussed Wednesday. The first option is to do nothing—to not move forward with the #1 Cochran proposal, and make no changes on West Liberty Avenue. If nothing is done, the borough would not gain any extra revenue from taxes or TIF contributions. Ella - There will be very little net gain. They pay no merchantile tax - that's why they like Dormont. They save hundreds on each car. The public lot is usually full and generates revenue and the businesses across the street will be left hanging... Dealerships are proven low-traffic businesses - you will lose consumer activity in the area - i know this from experience.   more ›
