Dormont to Move Forward with Cochran Plan

Dormont Council voted to move forward with a business plan for West Liberty Avenue, but the plan still is not final.

Dormont Council voted Tuesday to move forward with a business plan for West Liberty Avenue proposed by #1 Cochran representatives in February. Council voted 4-3 to move forward with its third option for working with #1 Cochran's plan, which includes completing a land swap with the automotive company and implementing a TIF district in the borough. Councilmen John Maggio and Eugene Barilla, and councilwoman Laurie Malka voted "no" to moving forward with that option, citing concerns over parking issues that could arise or be made worse while construction at the Cochran Nissan site is in progress. Borough solicitor John Rushford said council's vote is simply a vote to move forward—not a vote on a final plan. The next step is for the borough …

Ella - There will be very little net gain. They pay no merchantile tax - that's why they like Dormont. They save hundreds on each car. The public lot is usually full and generates revenue and the businesses across the street will be left hanging... Dealerships are proven low-traffic businesses - you will lose consumer activity in the area - i know this from experience.   more ›

It would be very interesting to see how much Cochran pays each year in their merchantile taxes (% of gross profits) in the townships that are home rule communities. I would assume that they save quite a substantial amount of money by being in Dormont where they do not have to pay a merchantile tax. They should pay for the parking garage to be built so that we do not lose our local businesses.   more ›

Local Biz Owners Share Thoughts for West Liberty Avenue

Dormont business owners and residents shared thoughts and concerns at Wednesday's informational meeting regarding #1 Cochran's proposed West Liberty Avenue business plan.

Dormont business owners and residents gave mixed reviews of the options the borough presented Wednesday for working with the West Liberty Avenue business plan proposed by #1 Cochran earlier this year. In February, #1 Cochran proposed a business plan that includes land swaps with Dormont Borough, as well as improvements to West Liberty Avenue. The land swap, however, would involve #1 Cochran taking ownership of the triangle-shaped parking lot at the corner of West Liberty Avenue and McFarland Road in exchange for land it currently owns—a move some said could have serious negative consequences for business owners in that block of West Liberty Avenue. Earlier this year, the borough formed a committee of small business owners and residents who…

"Fraud, Sell-outs and Ignorance once again attack our lovely little Dormont Neighborhood." After the immense push back by the entirety of the small business owners in the Dormont Strip along Washington Road between Peermont and Biltmore Roads it looks like the magic swap with Cochran has actually happened to the tune of millions of dollars. Construction beings shortly, taking at least 30 parking …   more ›

Dormont Council Discusses Option for Cochran Plan

Questions and comments about the options will be taken through Friday.

Dormont Council, as well as about 25 citizens and small business owners, met Wednesday to review options for the much-discussed West Liberty Avenue business plan proposed in February by #1 Cochran. The plan #1 Cochran proposed in February included the following: Three options in response to #1 Cochran's proposed business plan were discussed Wednesday. The first option is to do nothing—to not move forward with the #1 Cochran proposal, and make no changes on West Liberty Avenue. If nothing is done, the borough would not gain any extra revenue from taxes or TIF contributions. The lack of funds would mean that streetscape improvements, such as new sidewalks, lights, and landscaping would not be made. The second option is to complete the land …

Parking is at a premium on West Liberty Av. Patrons to the local businesses in that area need to be afforded adequate parking. Why can't Cochran build on the property they own between Biltmore and Park Blvd and if they need more, let them build a parking deck behind their existing Nissan building. They are not wanting to move but they always could. Everyone needs to work together for the benefit …   more ›
