State Sen. Wayne D. Fontana

New Proposal Marks National Library Week

State Sen. Wayne Fontana plans to propose to the Senate that Pennsylvania recognize a specific week in April as National Library Week.

Next week marks National Library Week throughout the country.  First debuting in 1958, National Library week is sponsored by the American Library Association and observed by libraries nationwide each April. Carnegie Library Brookline Services, Hours to Increase

Because of a tax approved by residents in 2011, the Carnegie Library system has the funding to increase both library services and hours at some branches.

Services and hours are increasing at several Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches—including the one in Brookline—thanks to a tax residents voted for in 2011, and increased revenue from county property tax reassessments. City of Pittsburgh residents approved a tax in 2011 that would directly benefit the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. As a result, library patrons throughout the county could benefit. Suzanne Thinnes, communications manager for Carnegie Library, said hours will be increased at all neighborhood Carnegie Library branches, including the Brookline Boulevard branch. The only branch that will not be affected is the main branch in Oakland. “With increased services, there comes an increase in programming across the board,” Thinnes…

Dormont Library received a programming grant for Muslim Journeys, a study of Muslim culture and religion.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about Muslim culture, Dormont librarian Diana D’Agostino said. Talk is often negative, and the religion is often misunderstood. Dormont Public Library—and more than 800 others across the country—are hoping to change that perspective through a new, grant-funded program that explores Muslim culture and religion. “We’re really not that different, which is something a lot of people don’t realize,” D’Agostino said. “We’re hoping, mostly, that people will come to these programs and come away with a more informed opinion of Islam.” The Muslim Journeys program was made possible by a one-year grant from the National Endowment for Humanities and the American Library Association. In addition to Dormont …
