Scott Township now boasts one of the biggest and most pristine boxing clubs in the Pittsburgh area after Wolfpack Boxing Club opened there last month. You might be surprised to learn that 30 percent of their members are women.
Since 1958, Brookline has boasted a boxing club that's trained possibly hundreds of young students, and now another of the biggest and most pristine boxing clubs in the Pittsburgh area is just a stone's throw from Dormont. Wolfpack Boxing Club recently moved from its small gym in Bridgeville to a sprawling warehouse building on Gregg Street in Scott Township, near Carnegie. Jeff Mucci, 41, of Cecil, took over the boxing club from former Pittsburgh Steelers player Craig Wolfley and current broadcaster, last January and has been working to expand its membership. “I just outgrew it,” Mucci said of the old gym on Station Street behind the PNC Bank. “When I saw that brick wall, I was sold on (this building). The inflatable orange piggy bank was flying high Thursday as Bottom Dollar Foods opened seven new discount grocery stores around Pittsburgh. Hundreds of people packed the new store in the Great Southern Shopping Center all day and found great deals and long checkout lines. “We’ve been very well received by the community, I’m pleased to say,” store manager Bob Powell said. “Pittsburgh has really embraced us.” The North Carolina-based grocery store chain also opened stores in Scott, Baldwin, Penn Hills, McKeesport and Aliquippa with more on the way. The Samburu Project, a Santa Monica-based nonprofit founded by Mt. Lebanon native Kristen Kosinski, will host a unique photography exhibition to raise money to drill fresh water wells in Africa and to create awareness of the World Water Crisis. The event will be held in Carnegie from 7-9 p.m. today, Thursday, at the Papa J’s Garden Piazza. Every day 4,500 children die worldwide due to the lack of access to clean, safe drinking water. The Samburu Project provides a simple solution to this extraordinary problem. Since 2006, The Samburu Project has drilled 40 wells in Samburu, Kenya, benefiting 40,000 people through the provision of clean water, ending their lifelong struggle to find this precious resource. Competition is good, so it's nice to see other grocers getting into the market. I doubt Giant Eagle will suffer much but the smaller chains like Foodland and Kuhns could be threatened even more. Anything that keeps prices in check is helpful.
