Pitaland Serving Up Mediterranean Meals in New Cafe

The renovations are complete, and Pitaland's new cafe is now open to the public.

Construction on Brookline Boulevard is still going strong, but inside Pitaland, renovations are complete and a new cafe is now open for business. The Pitaland Cafe opened May 3, and executive chef Greg Tweardy said despite the construction outside the store, business inside has been good. "This has been very well received so far and there's been very good feedback," he said. "The best thing is we've been getting a lot of the other business owners stopping in, so there's a lot of local support." The new cafe features a large menu of Mediterranean specialties, hand-made sandwiches, salads and soups, as well as hummus, pies and other baked goods. The menu is attached to this article as a PDF document. The grocery store also got an updated …

Yeah, I just noticed that. Guess I won't have much time to stop in after all. Another example of what I've already written--businesses in Brookline cater to each other and retirees, not those of us who work for a living. Hopefully what they mean by "hours can be adjusted to meet customers needs," actually is, "if people who work want to patronize us, we'll change our base hours of operation," and…   more ›

Award-Winning 'Beach Treats' Store Comes to Brookline Boulevard

A new gift shop will open on Brookline Boulevard this Saturday, April 6, and the owners are looking forward to meeting the community.

A little bit of the beach is moving onto Brookline Boulevard. Peggy and Rick Lawrence have moved their store, Beach Treats Gifts, from Virginia into the storefront at 972 Brookline Boulevard, near the Cannon monument.  The grand opening is this Saturday, April 6, and the couple is looking forward to sharing their passion with their new community. “We’re really coming home,” Peggy said. “We have so many friends and relatives here, and the neighbors have been wonderful on the Boulevard and at home.” Beach Treats began its 10th year in business in January, and was located in Tidewater, Va., where Rick and Peggy also lived until recently. But last year, the couple decided it was time to consider a change that would bring them closer to family …

Restaurant Spotlight: Hank's Hotdogs Too

Lots of Dormont-Brookline restaurants, shops and other great places can be found in our directory. Review them here!

This week's local business spotlight is Hank's Hotdogs Too of Brookline Boulevard. Formerly Hank's Dog House, this business that was housed on West Liberty Avenue for over four decades moved to the boulevard a few years back. Hank's is a throwback with its wax paper and stand-at-the-counter-to-eat regulars. That's right—no chairs. And did we mention that it's cash only here? Nevertheless, the regulars stand by the quality of the food and the nostalgic feel. Just ask them about the "secret recipe" chili. Take out or eat in. Metered parking out front. Have you been to Hank's? Review this restaurant on its directory listing. Follow Dormont-Brookline Patch on Facebook and Twitter. For more news, sign up for our email Newsletter.

No Slowing Down for Ink Master’s Sarah Miller

The Wyld Chyld Tattoo owner talks about the show, her success, and how she hopes to help Brookline Boulevard.

Nearly three months after claiming the runner-up spot on “Ink Master,” Sarah Miller has not slowed down. “This is a whole new normal,” she said. “It’s nuts. Our shop’s been kicking, too. We’ve been getting walk-ins left and right.” Miller, a tattoo artist and owner of Wyld Chyld Tattoo on Brookline Boulevard, was a contestant in the second season of Spike TV’s reality show featuring tattoo competitions. The title of Ink Master ultimately went to artist Steve Tefft of Groton, Conn., who won $100,000 and a feature in Inked Magazine, but Miller said she’s just fine with second place. Although she initially didn’t give much thought to being on the show, Miller said the experience challenged her and made her a better artist.  “I knew it would …

Carnegie Library Brookline Services, Hours to Increase

Because of a tax approved by residents in 2011, the Carnegie Library system has the funding to increase both library services and hours at some branches.

Services and hours are increasing at several Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches—including the one in Brookline—thanks to a tax residents voted for in 2011, and increased revenue from county property tax reassessments. City of Pittsburgh residents approved a tax in 2011 that would directly benefit the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. As a result, library patrons throughout the county could benefit. Suzanne Thinnes, communications manager for Carnegie Library, said hours will be increased at all neighborhood Carnegie Library branches, including the Brookline Boulevard branch. The only branch that will not be affected is the main branch in Oakland. “With increased services, there comes an increase in programming across the board,” Thinnes…

Would You Adopt-a-Block to Keep Brookline Clean?

This volunteer group helps keep the Boulevard clean each week. Can you help?

You might have seen people picking up trash along Brookline Boulevard—you might not know that they're part of the Adopt-a-Block program, and that they're all volunteers. In addition to community cleanup days, which happen about twice a year, volunteers with the Adopt-a-Block program go out about once a week to help clean up around the neighborhood. If you want to volunteer, too, blocks are available and all you have to do is contact organizers with the South Pittsburgh Development Corporation and add your name to the map. To get involved, email Pam Grabowski at mnp.grabowski@verizon.net and put Adopt A Block in the subject line, call at 412-343-2859, or write to The Brookline, P.O. Box 96136, Pittsburgh, PA 15226.
