'Green Thumbs' Invited to Grow With Beechview Community Garden

The Beechview Community Garden organization invites gardeners to a meeting tomorrow, March 2, to discuss this year's gardens.

Green thumb? Good thing. The Beechview Community Garden organization will meet tomorrow, March 2, at Brew on Broadway from 9 a.m. to noon to discuss the 2013 gardens. Those interested in renting community garden space are invited to attend this meet and greet with other gardeners, ask questions, and hear future plans for the garden. Cannon Coffee Owner Named to 40 Under 40 List

Nathan Mallory, co-owner of Cannon Coffee in Brookline, was named to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “40 Under 40” list.

Just over the Brookline border, on a farm in Baldwin Township, it’s much quieter than inside the storefront of Cannon Coffee. Away from the conversation and clinking cups, a honeybee hive is Nathan Mallory’s only focus this particular Wednesday afternoon. Unless you asked directly, he probably wouldn’t offer the fact that he just received an important local honor. Pittsburgh Magazine named Mallory to its 40 Under 40 list this year, a designation he could have earned with any number of his community projects and advocacies. Urban farming is just the latest. “The opportunity to live in a city and do this is a pretty cool thing,” he said. “I grew up on a farm, but there just weren’t people around with this kind of expertise.” The 31-year-old …

It's Trivia Night at Brew on Broadway!

Brew's monthly trivia night has some special features this month—like tamales from Tienda La Jimenez!

Brew's monthly Trivia Night is tonight, Thursday, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Brew on Broadway holds Trivia Night every month, but July's is special. In addition to more diverse trivia quesitons, plus chances to win coffee and gift cards, this month has Mexican food. Local Mexican grocery, Tienda La Jimenez, is celebrating 10 years in business. Cannon Coffee Looks to Future on Anniversary

Two years later, the Cannon Coffee staff celebrates the coffee shop’s anniversary by looking ahead.

Two years ago today, Brookline Boulevard got a little more … caffeinated. Cannon Coffee, which is quickly becoming the community hub for arts, entertainment and local meetings—as well as coffee—opened its doors in the middle of a snowstorm on Feb. 3, 2010. The vision owner Nathan Mallory had for the coffeehouse is becoming reality, but he said there’s a lot more to be done, and not just in Brookline. “You kind of reflect on events like open mic night that have been solid and steady since we opened,” Mallory said. “To keep the momentum that we have, and the camaraderie and the intimacy, is really something that we had no idea if it was going to work.” The challenge is to keep it going, especially through next year when the Brookline …
