Ways to Go Greener Near Dormont-Brookline

Here's a list of some places to take items that should not be sent to landfills or placed at the curb.

Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Dormont Borough and Brookline to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. Listed below those items are places at which those items can be disposed/recycled. Local Giant Eagle Stores to Offer Port Authority ConnectCard Service

The reloadable plastic smart cards are intended to eliminate the need for paper passes and tickets, according to the Port Authority of Allegheny County.

Giant Eagle's Market District store in Bethel Park and its store in Mt. Lebanon on Cochran Road are among nearly 50 of the grocery chain's locations that will begin selling and renewing the Port Authority's new ConnectCard. The reloadable smart cards are intended to replace paper transit passes and tickets, according to a statement from the Port Authority. Transit patrons can purchase weekly or monthly passes and load that amount onto their cards, then present the cards to ride a Port Authority vehicle. The Market District store is located at 7000 Oxford Drive. The Mt. Lebanon store is located at 1717 Cochran Road. Broughton/Baptist Intersection Set to Reopen by Nov. 30

But long-term restrictions will resume there in the spring.

Good news for folks in Pittsburgh's South Hills area, as the detours and restrictions that have been in place since March at the Broughton Road-Baptist Road intersection in Bethel Park are scheduled to be removed by Nov. 30, weather permitting. Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0 are completing temporary traffic signal work needed to reopen that intersection. And in fact, some movements through the intersection may be possible ahead of the full late November reopening. But the project will not be completely finished until late in 2013, according to a PennDOT news release. St. Clair Hospital has opened a new “state-of-the-art” Breast Care Center in Bethel Park that is designed to ease the stress of examinations and surgical procedures.

St. Clair Hospital has opened a new “state-of-the-art” Breast Care Center in Bethel Park that is designed to ease the stress of examinations and surgical procedures. The new facility on the third floor of St. Clair’s Outpatient Center across from South Hills Village Mall opened Monday and is serving the South Hills community. Relaxing photos of flowers and the beach hang on walls with soothing colors. “It’s a whole change in atmosphere,” St. Clair spokesman Bob Crytzer said. “That’s a big part of the attitude.” All services that include mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, consultation and surgery can be performed at the outpatient center. Hundred Acres Manor Opens Sept. 14

A 19-year-old college student placed first in the 20,000-meter race walk Sunday in the U.S. Olympic trials.

A 19-year-old from Bethel Park has qualified to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London next month.  Trevor Barron, a computer science major at Colorado College who just completed his freshman year, won the U.S. Olympic trials' 20,000-meter race walk (50 laps around the Hayward Field track) in 1:23:00.10, setting three records in the process, according to armorytrack.com. His 1:02:06.57 was an American record at 15,000 on the track, and the final 1:23.00.10 was both "an all-time Olympic trials best and an American best-ever, anywhere, on the track," the site reports. Elderly Woman Missing, Seen in Area

Verna Hreha, 82, of Jefferson Hills, was last seen Tuesday in Bethel Park.

Verna Hreha, 82, of Jefferson Hills has been reported missing and was last seen Tuesday at a Bethel Park business, saying she was lost. Hreha, a 5-foot-5-inch, 135 pound white woman with short gray hair, was last seen driving her car, a silver 2011 Hyundai Elantra with a Pennsylvania license plate, through a Swissvale neighborhood and asking for directions. She was seen in Bethel Park late Tuesday afternoon. She is in need of medication. Giant Eagle Announces Lettuce, Sandwich Ring Recall

Giant Eagle, including the Market District South Hills location, has issued a recall of bags of shredded iceberg lettuce, as well as certain sandwich rings, because they may have been contaminated by listeria, which causes food poisoning. Any customers with bags of "F.M. shredded lettuce" with the UPC code "3003430195" should return those bags to Giant Eagle for a full refund. Because contaminated lettuce may have been used in Giant Eagle's Italian, New York and All-American sandwich rings, customers should return those sandwich rings, as well, for a full refund.
