A suspended Catholic priest once assigned to St. Anne Church in Castle Shannon was sentenced Wednesday in federal court for violating federal child sexual exploitation laws. U.S. District Judge Alan N. Bloch sentenced Bartley Sorensen, 63, to serve 97 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for receiving and possessing thousands of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Sorensen was also ordered to pay a $25,000 fine, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton. On Dec. 9, 2011, a parish employee observed Sorensen viewing an image on the screen of his computer of a young boy wearing nothing but a shirt. Former Castle Shannon priest Bartley Sorenson was indicted on child pornography charges in December.
Bartley Sorenson, a former Castle Shannon priest who was indicted on child pornography charges in December, is schedule to plead guilty to those charges Wednesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sorenson was charged with possession of child pornography after thousands of expicit images of young boys were found on his computer. He formerly worked at St. Anne Church in Castle Shannon, and was working at St. John Fisher Parish in Churchill at the time charges were filed. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh suspended Sorenson in January. He is scheduled to plead guilt to those charges at 2 p.m. today before U.S. District Judge Alan Bloch, according to the Post-Gazette's report.

Sorensen is on home detention with electronic monitoring and is not allowed to use computers or cell phones with internet connection, according to the WPXI story. Sorensen was arrested Dec. 10 after an employee at St. John Fisher Parish in Churchill, where he was working at the time, reported seeing Sorensen looking at child pornography at the church. WPXI reports that Rev. Bartley Sorensen, formerly of St. Anne Church in Castle Shannon and now of St. John Fisher Parish in Churchill, faces new charges in addition to charges filed last week after a church employee reportly saw him looking at porn. According to WPXI's report, Sorensen was found to be in possession of compact dics containing more than 5,000 child pornography images, two child pornography videos, pictures and books that were found when police searched St. John Fisher Parish. Sorensen has been removed from active ministry and placed on administrative leave.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and WTAE report that Rev. Bartley Sorensen, who formerly worked at St. Anne Church in Castle Shannon, was charged with possessing more than 100 illegal pornographic images, including child pornography. Sorensen currently works at St. John Fisher Parish in Churchill. According to the news reports, a church worker saw Sorenson looking at pornography and reported the incident. WTAE reports that Sorensen is in Allegheny County Jail on a $100,000 bond, and that a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
