An unseasonably warm winter Friday was made all the sweeter by the opening of the long-awaited Sugar Cafe on Potomac Avenue. By 9 a.m. Feb. 18, the windows were cleared of paper and the door was open. The public responded in a big way. “Stripping the paper off the windows was our defining moment. We took the paper off and all this outside light came in, and I knew we were ready,” owner Kelly James said. Despite the mounting buzz around the cafe, James was stunned by the huge turnout. Starting with the sweets, although Kribel's and …

It doesn't take a Super Bowl appearance to get Steelers' fans to congregate for food and football, but it certainly ups the ante on any impending party plans. If you're throwing together a viewing party and don't want to rely solely on pizza, hoagies, and wings from your favorite takeout joint, why not pick up supplies to put together your own snack spread? For Dormont and Brookline, getting the right stuff can be as quick and easy as a walk down the block. For a crowd-pleasing snack mix of the traditional and unique, visit Pita Land on Brookline Boulevard and take advantage of their olive bar, hummus, baba ghanouj, and other assorted dips. Serve these dips with sliced pita, or visit Las Palmas (also on the boulevard) for tortilla chips, …

Ladies, I would love to provide you with photos to your hearts' content—unfortunately, I'm one person, with lots of photos to take and articles to write. I'm pretty good at multi-tasking, but alas, I haven't mastered the ability to do everything all at once (trust me, I'm working on that). If either of you get to Party Cake before I do again, help your neighbors to have a better look at this …   more ›
