Keystone Oaks defeated Chartiers Valley yesterday, and will advance to the WPIAL semi-finals for the first time in the school's history.
UPDATE (May 16, 10 a.m.): The KO varsity boys baseball team will play their WPIAL AAA semi final baseball game on Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m. against South Park. After a win Monday against Elizabeth Forward, the Keystone Oaks Golden Eagles baseball team will take on the Chartiers Valley Colts today, Wednesday, May 15 at 4:30 p.m. The Keystone Oaks baseball team, the 2013 section champion, won their first-round playoff yesterday against Elizabeth Forward with a 10-0 score. Senior Jared Skolnicki gave up only four hits during the game, and struck out 12. Junior Taylor Lehman provided a large chunk of the offense by going two for three with four RBIs. Wednesday's game against the Chartiers Valley Colts will be at the Upper St. Clair Community Rec. Center on Mayview Road. Allegheny County will host a rally in celebration of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ second-round playoff series against the Ottawa Senators. The event will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 14, in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse located at 436 Grant Street in downtown Pittsburgh. WDVE’s Val Porter will emcee the rally, which will feature the following five contests for Penguins fans: Winners of the costume, cheer, banner/sign and dance contests will be determined by audience vote. Among celebration, a family mourns the death of a 23-year-old man during the half marathon.
Nearly 23,000 people participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday under a clear sky. James Kirwa of Kenya defended his full marathon title in 2 hours, 13 minutes, 37 seconds. “I flew in last night from Nairobi, but I thought that I could win since I knew the course and training had been going well,” said Kirwa. “I cramped a bit at the end, and maybe next year I will come back to try for the 2:10 event record.” American Mary Akor of Hawthorne, CA won the women’s 26.2 mile race in 2:37:35. In the half marathon, Kenyans Julius Kogo and Risper Gesabwa took the 13.1 mile titles in 1:02:32 and 1:13:16 respectively, with Kogo setting a course record. Ryan Carroll, Dale Klobichur and Cory Sevacko have signed letters of intent with Pennsylvania colleges.
Three former Keystone Oaks High School football players have signed letters of intent with Pennsylvania colleges. Ryan Carroll will attend Mercyhurst University (Erie, Pa.), Dale Klobichur will attend Grove City (Pa.) College, and Cory Sevacko will attend Clarion (Pa.) University. Last season, Carroll was named second team all-Century Conference as a defensive lineman and Klobichur was selected as a first team all-conference at running back. Sevacko was chosen as a first team all-conference receiver and as a second team all-conference defensive back. Fans from Dormont and Brookline are invited to the 'Annihilate the Islanders Rally' in downtown Pittsburgh.
Allegheny County officials are planning an "Annihilate the Islanders Rally" before the Pittsburgh Penguins' first playoff game Wednesday, May 1. The rally begins at noon in the Allegheny Courthouse courtyard and includes giveaways from the Penguins and Turner's Dairy and an appearance from Iceburgh. Val Porter from WDVE will host the event and the Kardasz Brothers will perform live music. The best-of-seven playoff series against the New York Islanders begins at 7:30 p.m. at Consol Energy Center.
